Carol & The End of The World – Season 1 Episode 6 Recap & Review

Holidays

Carol & The End of The World Episode 6 begins with Carol staring at her blue suits, feeling annoyed about the weekend. Donna meanwhile gets herself a new blender, a dress and some watches from an empty, run-down store. Carol does some cooking, and cleaning, and flips through TV channels.

Donna drives up to a house decked up in Christmas decorations. This is her son’s family home and her other four kids and their families have also joined in to celebrate April Christmas. Donna is given a knitted sweater, which she puts on. As her family discusses memories of Donna’s son acting, she can’t seem to recall anything.

Carol has drunk a fair bit of wine when a small boy dressed as a vampire comes to her door. He asks for treats but Carol doesn’t have any. Since it’s late and dark, she ends up accompanying the boy as he goes trick-or-treating. They go to Carol’s neighbour, Greg’s house. Greg agrees to help Carol get the young vampire home.

At Donna’s, she realises how much she doesn’t know about her five kids. She was working a lot at the time and now feels left out of the stories. All her family members have plans to go see the world and they encourage Donna to as well. She says she’s still working on her novel.

The little vampire doesn’t let on much about his address and Carol and Greg just have to go along with his trick-or-treating. After a few houses and a lot of candy, Carol suggests they go to their last house and then head home. The boy runs off into an empty, broken-down house. They follow but he escapes through the backyard.

We then see Luis meet someone in an abandoned area. He exchanges a bunch of pills for a lavish birthday cake. Back home, his mother calls and he lies, saying he is celebrating with a few people.

While wrapping gifts with her family, Donna wonders if she could have done things differently.

Carol drives in her bike looking for the little boy while Greg and his wife drive around the area. She follows a trail of candy to a treehouse where she finds him hiding. She admits she struggles with young kids but she’s worried about him. She apologises for trying to force him to go home and they chat for a while.

Eventually, he allows Carol to drive him home. Inside his house, are mountains and mountains of candy. They realise he has no parents. Greg and his wife take the boy in, along with their two daughters and they go home. We then see two couples dancing, naked, around a campfire in the forest. Could this be the little boy’s parents?

In the morning, Donna gets a pleasant surprise when ‘Santa’ gifts her a memory book full of pictures from her past. They laugh about one of their favourite Christmases and Donna immediately looks a lot happier. Later, she kisses them all goodbye.

She admits there should have been more of her in the book but her kids tell her she did enough and give her a warm hug. She gets in her car and watches her kids leave, Marlon closing the door to his house. She sighs and drives back at the end of Carol & The End of The World Episode 6.

The Episode Review

Carol & The End of The World Episode 6 follows three storylines, with Donna’s and Carol’s taking up more space than Luis’. But each one offers a different perspective of life in the time of doomsday.

Carol’s escapade with the little boy says a lot about how the chaos of freedom can leave its own victims, some of whom go under the radar. Luis’ tale is short and sweet and a little heartbreaking when he feels the need to lie to his mother. He seems perfectly happy to be on his own with a cake. Maybe more other partygoers weren’t needed?

Donna’s story strikes more of a chord than either of those two, as the tales of her five children give us a glimpse into her past. She worked so hard to give her children the comfortable lives they have, but under the light of the oncoming planet, she struggles with regret. Maybe she should have spent more time with them than for them. They do console her but in the end, as she drives off alone, it doesn’t seem enough.
