Call The Midwife – Season 13 Episode 7 Recap & Review

Episode 7

Episode 7 picks up where Episode 6 left off, and we learn that both Joyce and Rosaline have become permanent midwives at Nonnatus House, earning their highly-awaited uniforms. Additionally, Joyce has secured the highest marks and will be featured in the newspaper.

Matthew arrives at Nonnatus House and meets with Sister Julienne, asking her to sign some documents transferring ownership of the house to the order. He explains that if he doesn’t transfer ownership now, the building might be seized and sold to cover the losses. Sister Julienne urges Matthew not to give up, reminding him that the sisters and midwives will always be grateful for his donation.

Trouble escalates when Matthew’s car is seized, hinting to everyone that he is in financial ruin. At home, Matthew realizes that he still owns two warehouses. Trixie suggests selling the property and using the money, but Matthew plans to invest it in real estate and enter into a partnership with his friend. However, he acknowledges that it will be five years before they can make any significant profit.

Matthew decides to go into business with his friends and plans to travel to New York to sign the deal and make it official. He asks Trixie to join him, but she refuses, which leads to him leaving without her. It’s clear that their marriage is falling apart.

Meanwhile, Joyce is visited by his cousin, who later turns out to be her abusive husband, Sylvester, from whom she is running. Sylvester threatens to expose Joyce for using a fake name to join the midwifery program unless she pays him. Disturbed by this, Joyce fears her career will be ruined once everyone learns the truth. She also notices Sylvester following her everywhere, whether it’s at the clinic or elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Rosaline comes across Alison, who is due soon. Alison wears the same jumper every day because she wants to hide her pregnancy from her mother. Crane finds her in the alley, struggling with pain, and rushes her to the clinic to deliver the way. However, Alison stresses that she never had a boyfriend.

Eventually, Alison’s mother is let in on the news, and she is worried about what she is going to tell her husband, Stanley. Later that day, Alison gives birth to a beautiful baby, but tragically, it is revealed that both Alison and the baby have Syphilis. When Alison is told about it, she hints that her mother might’ve Syphilis as well. 

It is revealed that Alison was sexually abused by her stepfather, Stanley, and it was his child that she was carrying. Alison never revealed this to anyone because Stanley threatened to abandon her mother and her siblings. Alison makes it clear that sh doesn’t want to return home, and Cyril makes some preparations and gets Alison and her son settled with a foster family.


The Episode Review

The Aylwards are really struggling financially. They’re in such dire straits that they can’t even afford to pay Jonty’s nanny. Matthew has resorted to selling his property to gather some money. He plans to invest this money in a new plan, but the results won’t come until a year later.

Trixie can see that Matthew is doing his best, but she’s finding it hard to support his decision. It’s taking a toll on her peace of mind and her sleep. Meanwhile, Joyce is facing trouble of her own. Sylvester is threatening to ruin her career by exposing her secret to everyone.
