Episode 6
Episode 6 kicks off with Rosaline, a pupil midwife, feeling the pressure of her final exams compared to her peers. Meanwhile, Nany is eager to attend the “Raise the Roof” meeting to advocate for better pay for nurses. Regarding her leave request, she is advised to discuss it with Nurse Crane. Elsewhere, the church pastor discovers two boys abandoned by their mother. Despite their abandonment, the boys show no signs of injury, and Turner notes that whoever left them at the church was keeping them well-fed. After a checkup, the boys are placed in foster care.
Trouble escalates for Matthew when he is called to attend an urgent board meeting in the afternoon. During the meeting, he learns that he has accrued a debt of a quarter of a million in the company’s name. The board members blame Matthew for the company’s financial troubles, stating that it is on the brink of bankruptcy due to his actions. Sadly, Matthew is ousted from the board, and his salary is also forfeited from that point on. Meanwhile, Trixie remains unaware of the situation.
Upon returning home, Matthew breaks the news to Trixie that he is in financial ruin and can no longer buy her the car. He admits that his investments have led him to the brink of losing everything. In simple terms, Matthew is broke. Trixie comforts him, reassuring him that they will face whatever troubles come their way together. Matthew also reveals that they will not be moving into their new home, which comes as a shock to Trixie, who was looking forward to it. To add to their woes, Trixie learns that they may also lose Nonnatus House.
The news of the abandoned boys, also known as the Red Ribbon boys, spreads quickly, and everyone condemns whoever left them at the church. Turner admits a pregnant woman named Torphy to the clinic, who is diagnosed with anemia. Torphy is also the same woman who abandoned the boys, explaining that she is no longer in a condition to care for them.
This decision is not due to her being a bad mother but because she is seriously ill, and the boys’ father is abusive and poses a danger to them. Torphy is also diagnosed with depression and may not be allowed to keep the baby she is expecting. A couple of days later, Torphy goes into labor and gives birth to a beautiful girl. Thanks to Cyril’s intervention, the welfare committee office allows Torphy to keep and care for the new-born. However, for the boys, she must first prove that she can cope with all the responsibilities.
As the episode nears its end, Rosaline excels in both the written and viva exams, feeling more confident than ever. Joyce, Rosaline, and the other two pupil midwives are all offered permanent positions at Nonnatus House.
The Episode Review
Things are starting to take a turn for the worse for Trixie and Matthew, and it looks like it might get even tougher. Matthew is out of money, his investments have dried up, and he’s no longer on the payroll. This leaves the household entirely reliant on Trixie’s salary.
However, there’s a new risk looming over them. It’s revealed that if things don’t improve, they could lose Nonnatus House, and both Trixie and the other midwives could lose their jobs.
