Calling All Captains break through with decisiveness and play their hearts out, while assessing their own lives. This EP pulls at the emotions, candidly looking at the state of the world and love, and how it has almost burned out. The band don’t hold back as they run their tongues and tell us that they’re hurting and drifting into misery.
The band want to heal, commit to the energy they once championed, though they’re not fully dislodged from the spark, being completely driven to feel everything. Their EP Emotion Sickness dabbles in pop punk and punk, as well as pulling at memories, times when the band felt outnumbered by demons.
Lyrically the act doesn’t focus on putting words together for dramatics, as there’s actually cohesiveness here, a great structure. Moments of terror come in thick and fast, and the lyrics demonstrate honesty, sincerity, even with a bit of ruggedness for good measure.
‘Wallflower’ begins the EP. A blast of guitars starts everything off as the vocals embed, showcasing these lyrics in a dimming light. The words aren’t jubilant, and they aren’t drenched in happiness, as they’re emotive and unnerving.
‘Skin & Bone’ shows the band declaring war. The instrumentals are solid, the percussion evident, and the lyrics show personal strife. Everything comes together well, though the anger overspills.
‘One More Day’ is an acoustic triumph. There are notes and melodies galore on this track too, harmonies which lift it all up. Sincere and riveting, the song blends sadness with years and years of pain.
Calling All Captains manages to create enough purpose to count, and their EP nods at the days when despair attacked like a titan.
