Out of all the reality shows on Netflix, Blown Away is perhaps the one that’s (no pun intended) blown everyone away from the first season through to the controversial third. With 10 episodes, a unique premise and some breathtaking glass sculptures, this has undoubtedly been a solid binge over the years.
Season 3 however, annoyed a lot of people. Many believed the winner was rigged from the beginning and there was a lot of backlash to it. Whether Netflix have actually realized this or not is up for debate but one thing’s for sure – season 4 is a massive improvement.
With a brand new presenter at the helm, Hunter March, the show feels invigorated, with the usual prize money of 100k up for grabs alongside a residency in Venice, Italy for glass blowing with Adriano Berengo, and an exhibition showcasing their work.
There’s a much bigger prize up for grabs this year and with that, comes improved talent and a lot of breathtaking glass pieces. Each episode follows the same format as the previous seasons, with each seeing the 10 competitors compete against one another to produce pieces that excel in design, innovation and creativity. All of this culminates in one competitor being eliminated each week (see: episode) until the finale sees a big showcase between the final two.
This time around though, it does feel like a much more organic competition and the final two chosen are incredibly talented and it’s difficult to tell who will come out on top. This keeps things exciting, with each of the individual episodes leaning into this IDEA with the bigger and more intriguing glass projects.
In one episode, we learn a lot more about the competitors as they create glass based on societal causes they care deeply about. Another sees the glassblowers take inspiration from nature for a gravity-defying installation. Each of these allow us to learn a bit more about each of the glassblowers, with exposition delivered in an organic way.
The point is, this year feels much improved and that initial intrigue that seemed to have waned in season 3 is back – and better than ever.
If you’re a fan of Blown Away or just taking your first steps into this crazy reality show, Netflix have done a Stranger Things with this one – returned to form after seemingly fading into obscurity. Season 4 is a great watch.
