We’ve had a lot of steps forward in the action genre lately, especially on the small screen. Heavy hitters like Peaky Blinders, Gomorrah and Gangs of London to name a few have given the big blockbusters a run for their money.
This is significant to note because when it comes to Blood Coast, this is one of those shows that doesn’t do anything particularly bad… but similarly it doesn’t do anything to stand out from the crowd.
At the center of this show is a big gang rivalry that looks set to blow up in the middle of Marseille. On the one hand you have Ali Saidi, the current leader who runs a tight ship. However, his empire is under threat by Murillo and his henchman, the Indian. There’s bad blood between them and that stems from Ali killing Murillo’s son by accident during a gunfight.
The sins of a father run deep, and what ensues is a huge rivalry that turns Marseille into a battleground. Caught in the middle of this though is Lyès Benamar, the head of a Narcotics team who try to stop things from getting out of hand. Unfortunately, the more they try, the harder it becomes. To mix things up though, a newcomer to team called Alice Vidal shows and seems to have her own agenda.
In terms of storytelling, there’s nothing particularly bad about Blood Coast (minus the ending but we won’t spoil that here). The story plays out at a decent enough pace but the subplots do feel a bit underdeveloped. Alice Vidal’s newcomer plot feels a bit too cliched and obvious. Similarly, the quirky team members all slot into archetypal roles as the story continues and while they do get more screentime, there’s a couple of niggling plot issues that hold this back.
The production design of the show is pretty good, although the series has a tendency to throw in these musical interludes toward the end of each chapter which doesn’t fit with the gritty tone the show is going for. And if gritty is what you’re into, Blood Coast does have that in abundance.
In fact, there’s a lot of action here and that stems from numerous gunfights and fistfights that break out across the 6 episodes. This is definitely not for the fainthearted either, as there’s some pretty squeamish scenes involving gore and big violence.
All things considered, Blood Coast is a decent show but it doesn’t do enough to stand out from others in this field. It’s certainly enough to recommend but whether it’ll stand the test of time and become a classic is debatable.
