What happened to Marie and Marcus in the snow?
The films begin with Marie and Marcus being dragged and butchered by what appears to be some sort of inhumane creature that has awoken when they choose to drill the thick snow. Fortunately, Marie survives and is found by two of her other teammates, Luke and Sebastian. Marie is too hysterical to speak and is covered with blood from head to toe.
She trembles in fear and begs them to leave this place as soon as possible. While everyone waits for Marie to wake up and answer their questions, Luc reveals that he found Marcus decapitated with his head nowhere to be found. William suggests that maybe it was an animal, but Luc makes it clear that it was no animal. Luc also suspects Marie to be Marcus’ killer.
Why does Seb leave the base?
Sabastian is having a hard time coming to terms with what happened out there in the snow, and unlike Luc, he is convinced that Marie is innocent and doesn’t have anything to do with Marcus’ decapitated corpse. He sits beside her and reminisces about the time they spent in the base despite Marie not speaking a word of English.
Eventually, Sebastian decides to leave the base to bring back Marcus’ body. On the other hand, Luc goes through Marcus’ camcorder and remembers a conversation where Marcus offered him an envelope full of cash for lying about having mechanical trouble with the Pathfinder and returning to base, allowing Marcus and Marie to carry out their job under no one’s scrutiny.
It only suggests that Marcus and Marie were looking for something in the snow that they didn’t want people on the base to know about. When Sebastian returns, Luc tries to show him the video where Marie is clearly butchering Marcus, but sadly, Marie has already deleted the clip while Luc slept. Seb doesn’t believe Luc and says he’s drunk and making up falsehoods. This infuriates Luc as he thinks Seb is favouring Marie over him.
Why is Luc detained?
Marie is not herself now: her eyes have turned blood red, and she has suddenly started to speak English like a native. Moreover, we also see her addressing herself in the plural, calling herself “We” before killing one of the crew members. All of this hints that Marie has been infected by some sort of virus or sentient parasite.
Soon, everyone comes to know about Gill Holland’s death, and Luc immediately points fingers at Marie, but no one believes him. However, when he is asked about the proof, Luc can’t provide any, but Seb backs him up, saying he saw Marie awake last night in the security room.
Luc also tells everyone that Marcus and Marie came to the base under the false pretence that they were looking for oil, but in reality, they were looking for something else. I was paid to keep my mouth shut, says Luc. Unlike everyone, Luc is convinced that Marie is the culprit and plans to keep her in captivity, but he is detained instead.
What is Marie infected with?
Paul and Seb investigate Marcus’ corpse and find out that Marcus was exposed to high levels of radiation before he was killed. It is also likely that everyone has been exposed to radiation as well. However, as per Seb, Gill didn’t die from the radiation emanating from Marcus’ body but from someone or something else.
Meanwhile, the Professor sits by Marie and the answers she lets on suggest that she, or should we say whatever is inside her, isn’t from Earth by a faraway planet. The Professor adds two and two together and realizes that the reason why Marie is acting so off is because she’s infected by an alien parasite that wants to replicate by taking over female hosts.
The parasite was exactly what Marcus and Marie were investigating in the snow in the first place.
How does the film end?
Marie, under the influence of the alien parasites, starts killing people. The first one to fall is Bobby, whom Mary kills by slashing his throat. Seb tries to save Bobby, but despite his best efforts, Bobby bleeds out.
Luc suggests Killing Marie, but the Professor suggests they knock her out with nerve gas and try to separate Marie from the alien parasite. They trap Marie in one of the glass chambers and start depriving it of oxygen, and… the film abruptly ends there.
Will there be a sequel?
Well, it’s a pretty bad way to just hastily cut the film off at the end right? We can smell a perfect setup for a sequel here. Marie, now under the influence of the alien parasite, has become a threat to the remaining crew members. The parasite, desperate to escape the harsh Arctic tundra where it can’t survive and reproduce, wants to reach the nearest civilization to spread and thrive.
The crew is well aware of the alien’s plans, which is why they’re determined to prevent Marie or the alien from leaving their base. However, there’s a twist in the plot. The alien (or Maria, acting as its host), may try to manipulate the Professor.
From the beginning, he’s been hesitant to destroy the parasite, drooling over the wealth of knowledge he could gain from studying it. So, it is possible that the alien might offer him some knowledge of its species and advanced technologies in exchange for help in escaping.
the movie doesn’t end there. it was erroneously clipped by Amazon it appears. there’s supposed to be 20 minutes left that no one on Earth has seemed to see, including myself
