Episode 8
Trigger Warning: Mention of rape, murder and suicide.
Episode 8 of Black Out (Snow White Must Die) starts with a flashback from when Jeong-woo was in high school. Back then, Jeong-woo, Geon-oh, Byeong-moo and Min-soo played football together while Bo-young cheered for them. The friends often got together to enjoy some light drinking at the warehouse.
The episode moves back to the present day with Sang-cheol leaving the forensics department with the reports that claim Bo-young’s underwear had traces of Byeong-moo and Min-soo’s DNA. He calls the cops and sends them to arrest Min-soo while asking them to keep the call on, knowing that Byeong-moo is chasing after him.
Byeong-moo rams his car into Sang-cheol’s and tries to steal the reports from there but Sang-cheol stops him. The two end up in a physical altercation that ends with Sang-cheol pushing Byeong-moo into the shallow river under the bridge. At the same time, Jeong-woo threatens to attack Min-soo with the hammer when Min-soo claims that everything that happened to Bo-young was his fault.
A flashback from the night of Bo-young’s murder shows her getting into an argument with Byeong-moo and Min-soo after Geon-oh had left to go home. Bo-young calls Byeong-moo and Min-soo inferior to Jeong-woo which infuriates Byeong-moo. He sexually assaults Bo-young while Min-soo follows suit.
Present-day Jeong-woo is shattered when he thinks about this and is about to attack Min-soo. Sang-cheol waits by the river and tries to talk Jeong-woo out of attacking Min-soo on the phone. Min-soo and Byeong-moo are both arrested and taken to the police station. Na-kyeom tries to talk to Jeong-woo and is shocked to learn what her friends did to Bo-young.
Geon-oh wakes up in his house and is confused due to his alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Ha-seol tries to calm him down but he runs out of the house in Ha-seol’s moped. Ha-seol tells Jeong-woo that Geon-oh was on the loose and the latter rushes to find him. At the police station, Gu-tak and Hee-do discuss the new forensic findings and he is shocked to learn that Geon-oh’s DNA was not found on Bo-young’s underwear.
The two cops discuss how Byeong-moo and Min-soo must have raped Bo-young and abandoned her in the warehouse. They add that Jeong-woo must have come to the warehouse and killed Bo-young in his drunk state. The cops reassure themselves with this theory to make it seem that they did not mess up the investigation 11 years ago.
Gu-tak is relieved to see that Geon-oh is free of trouble in the case and decides to have the investigation reopened. Na-kyeom follows after Jeong-woo and Ha-seol as they go looking for Geon-oh. At the same time, Choo-ho and Heung-soo rush to the police station when they learn that their sons have been arrested.
Byeong-moo tries to plead with Gu-tak but the latter refuses to help him and asks Sang-cheol to hold a thorough investigation of the case now that his son – Geon-oh was not a suspect.
Sang-cheol interrogates Byeong-moo but the latter, being a cop himself, refuses to say a word. Byeong-moo narrates how he spent all of his adult life working hard to become a cop and does not want to ruin that. At their house, Young-sil asks Hyung-sik to obey her orders and tell her the truth at all times.
Meanwhile, Sang-cheol tries to interrogate Min-soo who refuses to answer his questions as well. Choo-ho and Heung-soo talk to Gu-tak in his cabin and the tone between the trio has shifted. Gu-tak reveals that Geon-oh is innocent and adds that the video on Bo-young’s phone proves that Byeong-moo and Min-soo were the only ones who raped Bo-young.
He states that he cannot help them anymore. The two men get down on their knees and ask Gu-tak to save their sons. At the same time, Geon-oh gets more alcohol and starts hearing Bo-young’s voice. The next day, Choo-ho and Heung-soo talk to their respective sons. Byeong-moo gets upset when Heung-soo asks him to confess to his crimes and end this.
Gu-tak gets back home and is shocked when he does not find Geon-oh there. He gets a call from Young-sil who asks him to meet her over lunch. Meanwhile, a drunk Geon-oh causes chaos at local restaurants. Jeong-woo finds Geon-oh and tries to take him home when Geon-oh reveals that he wants to confess his crimes. Jeong-woo agrees and takes Geon-oh to the police station.
At the same time, Byeong-moo and Min-soo’s lawyers confess to the sexual assault of Bo-young as per Gu-tak’s recommendation. Hee-do asks the cops to prepare for Geon-oh’s witness interview when Jeong-woo brings him to the police station leaving everyone shocked. Geon-oh states that he wants to make a confession which causes Hee-do to panic. He calls Gu-tak to inform him.
Gu-tak calls Choo-ho and Heung-soo, asking them to throw a fit at the police station to ensure that Sang-cheol cannot hold Geon-oh’s interrogation. Sang-cheol is called out to deal with the two fathers as Gu-tak manages to convince Young-sil to let him go. Jeong-woo asks Sang-cheol to let him talk to Byeong-moo in private.
Sang-cheol makes a scene and has Jeong-woo put in the same holding cell as Byeong-moo. He also warns Jeong-woo about laying a hand on Byeong-moo in the cell which would cause him to be incarcerated for a long time. Meanwhile, Gu-tak rushes to the police station and takes Geon-oh to a secret room.
There, he gaslights Geon-oh into lying in his testimony about what happened that night for Su-oh’s sake. He gets Geon-oh to talk to Su-oh on video chat to manipulate him further into not turning himself in. In the holding cell, Jeong-woo and Byeong-moo argue and he asks the cop what he did to Bo-young.
Byeong-moo tells Jeong-woo that it all happened because Jeong-woo had the best things and excelled at everything while he and Min-soo were left behind. Byeong-moo blames his actions on Jeong-woo and claims that Bo-young is no more because of him.
After Gu-tak’s intervention, Geon-oh changes his statement and tells Sang-cheol that he left the warehouse to bring more alcohol and returned to find Bo-young’s underwear and backpack which he procured from there and kept in hiding for the last 11 years. That night, Na-kyeom shows up at Bo-young’s house and tells Jae-hee and Dong-min the truth about their daughter being raped by Byeong-moo and Min-soo.
Jeong-woo is released from the holding cell. He asks Byeong-moo to wait for what is in store for him. Jeong-woo tries to chase after Geon-oh asking him what happened that night but the latter runs away and Jeong-ho meets with a car accident.
Gu-tak is driving back home when he gets a call from Geon-oh, asking his father to come to the warehouse. The episode ends with Gu-tak finding Geon-oh’s dead body in the warehouse after he had died by suicide.
The Episode Review
This show has me very concerned now that we are delving deeper into the mystery behind what happened on that fateful night. I hate Gu-tak’s character and I did not see his manipulation coming at the beginning of this one. Knowing all that he knows about the case, he was trying his best to save his sons. Now, one of his sons is dead while the other is in a mental health facility due to his medical condition.
Moreover, Dong-min, no matter how terrible the guy is, will lose his only three friends now that he knows that Bo-young was raped and possibly killed by the sons of his friends. Jeong-woo is probably going to end up dead at this rate where he keeps getting attacked and meeting with accidents one after the other. I really want to see a happy ending to this drama but from the way things are going, it does not seem likely…
