Episode 5
Episode 5 of Blackout (Snow White Must Die) starts with a flashback of when Jeong-woo was younger. His mother asks him to avoid driving the car but he jokes around with her and continues to take the car out. The episode jumps to the present time with Jae-hee telling Gu-tak they were the reason for Bo-young’s death.
We see another flashback of Bo-young visiting Gu-tak on the day of her murder when she catches her mother having an affair with Gu-tak. Bo-young flees from there and gets to the warehouse. Present-day Jae-hee asks Gu-tak to do her a favour and release Dong-min from prison. Gu-tak refuses to comply which causes Jae-hee to threaten him with exposing his secrets.
Meanwhile, Jeong-woo tries to trace back his steps from the night that led to Da-eun’s disappearance and Bo-young’s murder. He concludes that the car did not have enough fuel for him to return from the abandoned school that night after disposing of Bo-young’s body. At the police station, Byeong-moo gets upset when Sang-cheol tries to reinvestigate the case. He asks her about Da-eun which causes him to panic.
Sang-cheol notices this but does not specify much. Meanwhile, Ha-seol tries to think back on her day and concludes that Su-oh had probably witnessed the murders and was a key witness who knew what happened that night. He goes through the interrogation footage and tries to retrace Jeong-woo’s steps from the night of the incident.
Coincidentally, Jeong-woo also takes the cab to the location where Bo-young’s body was found and tries to retrace his steps assuming he was trying to dispose of her body. After examining the reports from the case, Sang-cheol concludes that it is impossible that Jeong-woo managed to dispose of Bo-young’s dead body and kill Da-eun at the same time.
Jeong-woo also concludes that he couldn’t return to the warehouse and murdered Da-eun that night. Sang-cheol goes to the warehouse where he finds Jeong-woo. Both men discuss how Jeong-woo couldn’t commit both murders when Ha-seol shows up there. She states that Su-oh had painted the scene of crime in one of his paintings.
Sang-cheol argues that Su-oh was an unreliable witness due to his neurological illness. Ha-seol claims that she will return with the painting to make Sang-cheol see her argument and leave. That night, Jeong-woo goes back to the hospital and has a breakdown, looking back at the years of torment he and his family had to undergo.
The next morning, Na-kyeom shows up at the hospital and checks on him but he tries to push her away. She does not budge and insists on having a meal with him. During the meal, Jeong-woo tells Na-kyeom that both the murder of Da-eun and the disposal of Bo-young’s body happened at the same time. He states that he will be visiting the police station to ask the cops to reopen the case.
At the same time, Byeong-moo helps Jae-hee, Choo-ho and Heung-soo meet with Dong-min as the four discuss what they can do for Bo-young’s funeral now that her remains are found. Jae-hee and Dong-min argue and he threatens to hit her which causes her to leave. Ha-seol runs into Gu-tak who shows up at the restaurant to meet Heung-soo and Choo-ho.
They discuss Bo-young’s impending funeral and how Jeong-woo was able to find her remains. Gu-tak asks the men to leave Jeong-woo and adds that he will try to persuade Jeong-woo to leave town. He also asks Choo-ho to fire Ha-seol as a personal favour. Ha-seol meets Hyung-sik that day and tries to get an update on Su-oh’s condition. She tries to meet him but Hyung-sik claims he is not in the best condition to meet her.
Ha-seol asks Hyung-sik to tell him when she can meet Su-oh and leaves. On her way back, Ha-seol spots a man who looks like Su-oh. The man gets out of the taxi and enters Gu-tak’s house. At the same time, Sang-cheol meets the cops at the station and shares the discrepancies he found in the investigation.
This causes Section Chief – Hee-do to rile up but Gu-tak tells Sang-cheol that the case cannot be reopened unless new evidence is found. Jeong-woo shows up at the station and asks the cops to reopen the case but Gu-tak refuses. Gu-tak asks to talk to Jeong-woo in private and asks him to stop trying to get the case to be reopened.
He states that as a friend of Jeong-woo’s father, he tried his best to make sure Jeong-woo does not have to serve a stricter sentence. Gu-tak adds that reopening the case now will only instigate the matter further. Jeong-woo leaves just as Jae-hee sends a text to Gu-tak, threatening him to release Dong-min.
Gu-tak reviews Dong-min’s interrogation footage and claims that Sang-cheol had used unfair means to get him to confess. He asks Hee-do to release Dong-min based on this and calls Jae-hee to tell her that Dong-min has been released. Upon leaving prison, Dong-min calls Choo-ho asking him to hire a contract killer.
On the other hand, Assemblywoman Young-sil waits for Hyung-sik to show up for dinner at a local restaurant. The guests cheer her up and take selfies with her, thanking Young-sil for the great work she has been doing for them. That night, Choo-ho and Heung-soo meet Dong-min. Heung-soo argues that Dong-min should rethink his decision to have Jeong-woo killed but the other two men ask him to back out of this.
At the same time, Jeong-woo meets Sang-cheol at a bar and the two discuss why the case should be reopened. Sang-cheol states that he was not on Jeong-woo’s team but wanted to reopen the case to arrest his accomplice. Jeong-woo states that he went to the warehouse that day because he was angry at Da-eun for rejecting his call. He tells Sang-cheol that he assumed that Da-eun was cheating on him.
Sang-cheol tells Jeong-woo that there is no way for them to reopen the case until new evidence is found. At dinner, Young-sil talks to Hyung-sik about work and asks if he is stressed because of Su-oh. He excuses himself to go to the restroom and runs into one of his female patients. Young-sil ends up checking Hyung-sik’s phone and finds the message there and is shocked.
At the same time, Heung-soo is panicky around Byeong-moo. Dong-min goes to Jeong-woo’s house with a gun to kill him. Ha-seol sees that the light in Su-oh’s bedroom is on and asks to see him. Gu-tak shows up there and takes Ha-seol to Su-ohs room to prove that he is still in the hospital.
As they leave, they run into a man who looks like Su-oh which leaves Gu-tak shocked. At the same time, Jeong-woo gets home and spots Dong-min inside his house. Dong-min points the gun at Jeong-woo but the latter does not budge as the episode ends with the sound of a gunshot.
The Episode Review
This episode was extremely intriguing to watch as the show has finally introduced one of the biggest plot twists ever – that Su-oh probably has a twin brother. One can assume that Su-oh and his twin are both the same age as Jeong-woo, Min-soo, Byeong-moo, Bo-young, Da-eun and Na-kyeom. These could be all part of the same group and Su-oh, who felt left out due to his disability was singled out by the group, including his twin.
There is a strong possibility that Su-ohs twin sexually assaulted and killed Bo-young while someone else is responsible for the death or disappearance of Da-eun. Since her body has not been found, one can assume she is alive and is someone who has answers to all the questions this episode has left us with.
