Episode 4
Episode 4 of Black Out (Snow White Must Die) starts with Jeong-woo waking up to a hallucination of Bo-young and Da-eun asking him how it feels to be the only one who had the chance to grow up.
The episode jumps to where we left off with Sang-cheol trying to get Jeong-woo to come back to his senses. Jeong-woo tells Sang-cheol that it was not he who killed Bo-young and Da-eun and he begs the cop to catch the real killer.
Just then, the cops show up and Sang-cheol asks them to send the forensics team inside. Byeong-moo checks up on Ha-seol and is shocked when he hears about his friend’s remains being found. Gu-tak asks if Jeong-woo is okay and asks Ha-seol to go to the station to testify.
Jae-hee arrives at the scene, asking to meet Bo-young but is shattered when Gu-tak formally reveals that Bo-young’s remains were found in the manhole. Jae-hee sees Ha-seol and states that Bo-young would have been as old as her if she were alive. She breaks down upon seeing Bo-young’s remains being taken to the police station and collapses.
At the same time, Sang-cheol takes Jeong-woo to the warehouse and asks him to confess that he was the person who killed Bo-young. He beats Jeong-woo up and asks him to confess to the murder but Jeong-woo insists that he did not commit the murders. Byeong-moo loses his patience and asks Jeong-woo to respect their late friend.
Min-soo tells Na-kyeom about Bo-young. Dong-min learns that his daughter’s remains were found and gets restless. Assemblywoman Ye Young-sil learns about the remains and visits Bo-young’s house. Jae-hee tries to get Young-sil to help Dong-min escape prison. Young-sil states that she cannot help her which leads Jae-hee to break down further.
Meanwhile, Ha-seol records her statement about how she found the remains and about how she led Jeong-woo to it. Chief Kim Hee-do sees Jeong-woo there and gets upset with him. He threatens to attack Jeong-woo and asks about Da-eun’s remains. After recording his statement, Jeong-woo leaves to go home and thinks about the recent developments in the case.
He hopes to find any evidence that could free him of the guilt of Bo-young’s murder. Meanwhile, Ha-seol visits Su-oh in his painting room and tells him how she found Bo-young’s remains with Jeong-woo’s help. Su-oh gets aggressive and has a breakdown. He collapses after having epileptic seizures and is taken to the hospital.
Ha-seol sees the painting inside the room and is shocked. In the ambulance, Su-oh tells Ha-seol that Jeong-woo is innocent. Sang-cheol meets Gu-tak in his office and asks if he had sped up Jeong-woo’s trial without certain evidence. He asks if Gu-tak was trying to help Jeong-woo get a shorter sentence by trying him as a minor.
Gu-tak confesses to doing his best to ensure that his best friend’s son did not have to spend 20 years in prison. Jeong-woo goes to his room and the storage to look for clues so he can remember what exactly went down that night.
At the hospital, Su-oh is anxious and tells Ha-seol that the paintings in his greenhouse all have secrets. Assemblywoman Young-sil’s husband – Park Hyeong-sik who is Su-oh’s doctor meets Ha-seol and is shocked by her medical knowledge. He asks Ha-seol to leave as visiting hours are over and waits for Gu-tak to show up.
Meanwhile, Jeong-woo tries to recollect what he did on the night of the incident before he suffered the blackout. He finds receipts from the gas station and recalls how he used to only get $10 worth of gas to drive the car around. Jeong-woo rushes to the gas station to find a clue but the man kicks him out. Na-kyeom shows up there and asks Jeong-woo to go to Seoul with her.
Jeong-woo tells Na-kyeom that he is not going anywhere until he finds Da-eun. He draws the line between them and states that they are just friends, asking Na-kyeom to stop overstepping her boundaries. A flashback from high school shows Na-kyeom having a crush on Jeong-woo.
At the same time, the housekeeper tells Gu-tak that she found Su-oh’s drawings in the greenhouse and claims they were too dark and gory for her. Gu-tak sets the paintings on fire and destroys all the painting gear from Su-oh’s room in his absence. Ha-seol shows up at Gu-tak’s house and states that she is picking up some of his art gear for the hospital.
Gu-tak asks Ha-seol to stop treating Su-oh like a person her age since he has the mental capacity of a child. The people of the town try to mourn Bo-young’s death but Jae-hee kicks them out, asking to be left alone. At the same time, Na-kyeom meets the director of her upcoming film along with the CEO of her management company. She talks to the director about her personal life and states that she is in love with a murderer.
Na-kyeom tells the director that it does not matter to her if pursuing a criminal will ruin her career. At the hospital, Dr Hyeong-sik gets a threatening text about killing Bo-young which causes him to panic.
That night, the cops get together for drinks and Chief Kim discusses the double homicide cases. Sang-cheol notices that the investigation was shoddy and rushed as Jeong-woo was sentenced without even having a blood analysis. Dr Hyeong-sik and Gu-tak have a chat about Su-oh and the cop states that Bo-young’s body was also found.
He tries to get some more understanding of the paintings Su-oh made of the visions that he saw in his dreams but the doctor is not able to help Gu-tak with this. Gu-tak notices that Hyeong-sik looks nervous. That night, the men of the town including Heung-soo and Choo-ho discuss how it would be better if Jeong-woo leaves town.
Ha-seol tries to defend him but the elders scold her. Jung-sook tells Ha-seol that Geum-hee refused to let the place of the murders (i.e. the warehouse) be destroyed for the last 10 years. She also learns that the kids used to play with a tractor that used to be in the warehouse. Ha-seol realises that one of the horrifying paintings made by Su-oh had a tractor with blood all around it.
Min-soo asks to hang out with Jeong-woo that night after his shift ends. Meanwhile, Jin-hyeok keeps recalling the text message and panics as he leaves to meet his wife – Assemblywoman Young-sil. Coincidentally, the forensics team tell Sang-cheol and Byeong-moo that the skeletal remains of Bo-young had all items of clothing in place but her underwear.
Sang-cheol wonders if she had been sexually assaulted before the murder and asks the forensic expert to look into that. On the other hand, Hyeong-sik is not being himself during their photoshoot and Young-sik notices this. Later in the night, the villagers show up at Jeong-woos house and ask him to leave town. They threaten to attack him but he refuses to leave until Da-eun is found.
Min-soo asks his father to take the rest of his friends away. Jeong-woo takes Min-soo to the warehouse and asks him if he remembers seeing Bo-young cry before the day of her murder. Min-soo states that Bo-young never cried, no matter what happened in her life. Jeong-woo points out that since she was crying on the day of her disappearance, this meant something very serious had happened to her.
Min-soo gets upset with the questions and lashes out at Jeong-woo, stating he is still stuck in the past. He leaves Jeong-woo in the warehouse. Jeong-woo wonders what happened to Bo-young that prompted her to cry in the car. That night, Jae-hee shows up at Gu-tak’s house and states that he should not forget that Bo-young was killed by them as the episode comes to an end.
The Episode Review
There is not a single episode of this show that does not end with chaos. We have so much going on and every new episode twists the main plot even more. We have many reasons to assume that Su-oh used to be mentally fit in the past and is being given medication to appear mentally challenged.
Based on the ending of this episode, it can also be assumed that Bo-young met Su-oh and was possibly raped by him. Hyeong-sik probably helped cover the incident and get rid of Bo-young’s dead body. This can also be why Jae-hee tells Gu-tak that Bo-young was last seen at his house.
It is possible that Gu-tak is really unaware of all this and only burned the paintings down to save his son without knowing the truth. Ha-seol seems like a key player now and I hope she pairs up with Jeong-woo to solve the mystery behind the two murders from 10 years ago.
