Prologue
Welcome to Black Myth: Wukong, the latest action RPG from Chinese studio Game Science. We’ll be guiding you through all the main areas of the game and defeating all the bosses along the way. Lets get started!
After the initial opening scenes, we’ll be immediately thrust into a boss fight.
Boss Fight – Erlang, the Sacred Divinity |
||
Erlang is a sprightly foe with a variety of moves but the good news here is that you don’t have a health bar, nor is there any worry about dying. Instead, this fight serves as a tutorial to get you up to scratch for the horrors ahead. You’re given some basic instructions on how to fight (Square (X) for a Light Combo and Triangle (Y) for a Heavy Attack. However, holding the right trigger and pressing a directional button on the pad will activate special moves, of which there are three here. They are as follows:
Feel free to use these however you want, and don’t worry too much about taking damage. You can roll with Circle (B) or deflect projectiles by holding the left trigger (L2) but use this opportunity to get used to timings and the general flow of battle.

On Our Way
When you gain control of your character, defeat the small enemies. Enemies in Wukong will drop Will and Experience Points. The former serves as a form of currency which you can use at Shrines, but more on that shortly.
In this area, take a slight right to pick up 1x Aged Ginseng. This is material that can aid us with crafting later on in Chapter 2. It’s a good idea to search around these areas and collect any flowers you come across, as they can be very useful for crafting later on in the game.
These alsorespawn every time you die or move to a different area so don’t worry too much if you miss a few as you play through.
Continue along the path and after climbing the stairs, you’ll have a choice of going left or right.
It really doesn’t matter which way you go as the two paths link back to one another anyway. However, on the left, at the bottom of the path next to an enemy, you’ll find a chest which holds 2x Tiny Piece of Gold and 3x Yarn.
Follow the glittery trail down and watch the cutscene. After, you’ll gain 1x Incense Trail Talisman. This is Black Myth’s version of the Souls-esque bonfires.
You can rest up and recover health, buy gear, brew potions and even redistribute any skill points you gain. However, enemies will also respawn in the area (minus bosses) so you need to think through your moves carefully.
When you’re done, keep moving along the linear pathway. It’s also worth noting here that pressing L1 allows you to use your Goard to recover health.
Front Hills
From this point onwards, Black Myth: Wukong really thrusts you into the world head-first. There are numerous enemies dotted about, each of varying difficulty.
Now, Black Myth is a linear game but some of the areas (like this one across the bridge) tend to open up a bit and give the illusion of a much larger world.
In this section, defeat the axe-wielding wolf and then immediately take a left at the tree (which holds 2x Purple Lingzhi) and jump down into the stream. Follow the water upriver, collecting any resources along the way. You’ll notice them because they glow white when you’re nearby.
At the end of the stream, after passing under the bridge, you’ll come across a Crow Diviner Yaoguai enemy. Although still a lesser enemy, this guy has more HP and packs a bit more of a punch to beat.
Use this time to get used to his attacks. His combos are usually either 1 or 2-strikes at a time, but he does have a reverse strike with his sword where he’ll spin and hit you, so be mindful of that.
However, it shouldn’t pose too much of an issue. Just make sure you get those timings down to a tee. You’ll gain 176 Will and 175 Exp as well. You’ll also notice green flames hovering in the air. These are little Will pick-ups that give you an extra bonus.
Now, circle back and return all the way up the pathway, past the stream and turn right to follow the path. On the way, there’s a little mini-cutscene where a creature scurries off.
Investigate the area it was and you’ll grab a Key Item, 1x Skandha of Form. Continue forward and we’ll come to our first Boss of the area.
Boss Fight – Bullguard |
||
With no spells to cast, Bullguard can look like a daunting foe. First thing’s first, lock on with your right analog stick. Make sure you continue to circle Bullguard as you want to strike at the opportune time. Light Combos are easier to pull off than a Heavy Attack, but the latter does more damage, so you’ll have to weight up which is best for you. Personally, Light Combos allow more flexibility, especially coupled with good stamina stats, so we usually opt for this. Bullguard has a few attacks to watch out for, which are as follows:
These are the three main ones to watch out for, and the best time to hit is after the third hit with the jumping strike, and the swiping combo. While you can hit it after it rushes at you, the recovery is quicker than the other two. If you manage to nail an entire Light Combo (which ends in a Heavy strike anyway) you’ll manage to stagger it down. Eventually a cutscene will trigger where we’ll be able to use our first spell – Immobilize. Feel free to use this at any time to score a bonus Combo. And be sure to use your Roll to dodge through those attacks. If you can get behind Bullguard then that’s a bonus. Eventually, it’ll go down. Rewards: 388x Will, 1x Stone Spirit, 482x Experience Points. |
Now, at this point it’s worth noting that you’ve probably gained some Spark. For every Level Up, you’ll be granted a point that you can use to level up skills, abilities, your health, stamina etc. This is under the Self-Advance tab of the menu, and split into two parts – Foundation and Staff Stances.
Depending on how you play (and how familiar you are with games that rely on tight combat), it’s a good idea to increase your stamina and health early on.
When you’re done, continue along up the hill. There’s some extra resources dotted around but the correct path is on the left (pictured below).
At the top of this pathway you’ll come across a ruined temple.
Destroy the barrels here for additional Will and be sure to approach the edge of the balcony and press R2 to meditate. These Meditation Spots are handy asthey’ll grant you a free Spark Poin, so it’s worth hutning for them.
When you’re done, turn around 180 degrees and head on through the gap in the rocks to find the next Shrine.
Outside The Forest
After a brief interlude of transforming into a cicada and flying around the area to scout the place (honestly, it’s super linear; there are two optional bosses and a chest), transform back and it’s time to progress forward.
From your starting posiiton, progress forward and after crossing the wooden bridge, take a left. The reason for this is that there’s a chest just behind the ruined statue. It’s also guarded by a tougher foe, a Bandit Chief. It’s a good idea to use Immobilize on this one and hit it with a Light Combo while stunned.
inside the chest happens to be 2x Evil Repelling Medicament and 5x Tiny Piece of Gold. Progress forward from here and feel free to explore the area if youy wish. There are a few different flowers and resources, along with a number of lesser goons patrolling the area.
If you move directly forward from chest location though, you’ll come across a number of lanterns leading to an optional boss.
Optional Boss – Guangzhi |
||
Although optional, it’s highly recommended to tackle this boss, and tackle it early. Not only does it guard the First Bell for a Secret Boss later on, it also offers up some valuable rewards. Guangzhi has a number of combos and the key to this fight is knowing when to dodge-roll through them, closer to Guangzhi rather than away from him. It’s a good idea to dodge the first combo (Guangzhi also rushes at you with a spinning combo to begin with) and then, hit him with Immobilize. If you Immobilize mid-combo, Guangzhi will finish his move and disrupt your flow, so always bear this in mind. You should be able to get a full Light Combo off immediately, especially if you time it right after he’s finished his combo. He also has the following attacks:
Most of Guangzhi’s attacks look worse than they are. Be careful not to get burned though, and if you do, then roll constantly to extinguish the flames. Try and stay on the offensive and certainly watch out for the worst attack Guangzhi has in his arsenal. This sees Guangzhi back up then launch across the arena, slamming down with a shockwave attack and then numerous slashes after. If you get hit with the first splash attack, this will do serious damage as you’ll struggle to avoid the other slashes. Stay on the attack and although it may take a few goes, you’ll eventually get him down. Rewards: 700 Exp, 524X Will, 1x Stone Spirit. PS: Be sure to touch his staff after he’s dead, and you’ll grab 1x Red Tides, which is a super useful spell to use. |
With Guangzhi defeated, ring the Bell behind him to start off our little Side Quest for a secret boss. Collect any goodies, including a stray Will pick-up and leave the sanctuary.
Take a left at the path and keep moving west until you come to our second optional Boss, Wandering Wight. It’s up to you if you want to tackle this guy, but as he’s optional and quite tough too, we’ll circle back to this in a separate guide.
Behind the Wight you’ll find a tunnel. Head on through to the other side and continue on the linear path until you reach the temple.
Guanyin Temple
Use the Shrine to rest up and you’ll find a new Armor Set to craft, called Pilgrim’s Set. If you’ve been collecting resources thus far, now is a good time to use those (alongside the Will we’ve got) to upgrade your gear.
To the left of the Shrine, you’ll also find a chest which holds 2x Tiny Pieces of Gold and 2x Stone Spirit. When you’re ready, progress up the stone steps into the next boss arena.
Boss Fight – Lingxuzi |
||
Okay, big boss time. Although Lingxuzi is the largest boss we’ve faced up until now, he’s also the easiest to beat. His moves are well-telegraphed and he has obvious wind-ups that can easily be avoided. As long as you’re smart and don’t try to rush the fight. Every fight will begin the same way; Lingxuzi will charge down at you and hit with a diving paw strike. Lock-on with the right analog stick and dodge past the two strikes. Immediately use Immobilize. Hit with a free Light Combo (with a bonus if you’re wearing the full Pilgrim Armour set) and lets prepare to fight properly. The reason why we always start the fight with this is because for these longer boss fights, the Cooldown will usually reset mid-fight or toward the end, allowing us to use Immobilize again. The key to this fight is watching Lingxuzi’s paws. He’ll usually lift one of his paws in the air momentarily before swiping, allowing you to dodge out the way. There’s also a Jumping Attack, where he’ll slam down with his paws. Simply dodge-roll back through this. Furthermore, the rolling move will see him sprint to the outskirts of the arena, and then roll toward you again, ending with a swipe. You want to keep a distance for this one. When Lingxuzi raises a paw to lick himself, this is when you want to strike or use Immobilize for maximum efficiency. if you defeated the Optional Boss Gaungzhi before, using Red Tides is incredibly useful. You want to make sure you hit the Heavy Attacks, rather than the Light Attack, simply because it involves Teleporting toward Lingxuzi and he’s an elusive foe so the Light Attacks (which have awful range) won’t do much. If you’re lucky, you may even inflict Burn for a while if you keep pummelling away. When Lingxuzi is down to around 75% health, Lingxuzi will also use the rooftops to try and trick you, moving about the arena. This is also a cue for a few more attacks to join his arsenal when he returns to the arena, including a biting strike where he’ll turn his head to the side and slide forward. You can dodge-roll through to the side and get a bonus few hits in here. When he roars, make sure you back up to avoid the Shockwave that’ll disorientate you for a few seconds. Finally, watch out for the Jumping Attack, where he’ll jump up and follow it with the Rolling strike we saw earlier in the fight. Bide your time, dodge at the last second and follow-up with a strike. Be sure to use Immobilize every chance you can, but cleverly use it when he’s just finished an attack to get the most out of this one. Eventually, he’ll go down. Rewards: 1x Grey Wolf Mask, 1049x Exp, 688x Will, 1x Stone Spirit, 1x Mind Core. |
With Lingxuzi defeated, you’ll find a chest on the far right of the area, this holds 2x Tiny Piece of Gold and 3x Yarn.
Proceed up the steps and inside the temple, on the left, you’ll find a jar holding 1x Celestial Jade Lotus Pill. This is a handy item that will increase your Maximum HP. So make sure you collect it!
Leave the temple, go down the stairs and use the Shrine to begin our next area.
