Cave Entrance

After defeating the Whiteclad Noble, head into the cave. Kill the wolf assassin that pops up and when you come to a fork in the road, go straight ahead rather than turning right.

At the end of the path, you’ll find a chest holding 1x Celestial Taiyi Pill and 1x Meditation Spot. Be sure to use both of these. There are also a couple of barrels en-route too that hold some Will inside so feel free to smash those up.

Now, turn back whence you came and turn left, climb up the steps deeper into the cave.

At the end of the path, kill the enemies that show, then rest up at the Shrine.

Cave Interior

At this point, it’s worth noting that you’ll have extra gear you can craft if you’ve defeated the secret Elder boss for ringing all three Bells. It’s not compulsory but the armour set does improve the Immobilize spell, so it’s definitely a useful tool for your arsenal.

When you’re ready, open up the large gates and prepare for another boss.

Boss Fight – Black Wind King

The Black Wind King actually play out quite similarly to both the Whiteclad Noble and the Guangzhi fights. Wind King likes to hit hard and swings around his weapon a fair amount, so you need to be strategic over when and where to hit.

As always, every fight begins with the same move, so you should be able to orchestrate this quite well and prepare accordingly. Here, King will jump in the air, hover for a split-second before pounding down to the ground. At this point, you want to dodge the initial splash, hit with Immobilize and get a good Combo in.

There are a few nasty moves you want to watch out for, and they are as follows:

  • Black Cloud Rush – King will turn into black smoke and charge at you. Keep an eye on him and dodge-roll to avoid. This move is usually followed up with:
  • Black Wind Tornado – King will churn up the ground in the middle of the arena, then slam down and spin his weapon around in several arcs. Back up to the edges of the arena to avoid damage.
  • Spinning Spear Thrust – King will jump in the air, spin around and hit the ground. His spear will get wedged in the ground for a split second, so get a couple of Light Attacks in, then back off.
  • Spear Combos – King has a couple of different combos, and most come in variations of 3 or 4 strikes. The worst will involve him holding onto his spear mid-combo and dropkicking. You want to time your dodges to try and avoid the worst, but by dodge-rolling diagonally back, rather than trying to roll through toward him.
  • Fire Breath – King will drink a concoction and then spew fire in your direction. You want to either jump over King and get to his back when he does this, or dodge-roll to the sides to avoid.

Alongside these moves, Black Wind King has a few big tells that you want to watch out for. When he raises up one foot, he usually follows up with Black Wind magic, which includes a shockwave of magic that can stagger and hit you, even if you dodge through the attacks.

When Black Wind King hits under 50% health, he has a couple of extra moves you want to watch out for:

  • Health Potion – Yep, this nasty bugger will drink a potion and recover part of his HP. You can Immobilize when you see a drink in his hand to try and stagger (particularly useful if it has barely any health left!) Otherwise, this is unavoidable. However, it’s also quite rare for him to use.
  • Jumping Spear Attack – Not dissimilar to the spear thrust, this will be followed up this time with two spinning strikes, where he’ll carve up the spear in a diagonal motion toward you. You want to dodge-roll into him
  • Spear Splash Attack – Another big attack; King will slash a few times before jumping in the air and then hitting the ground with Black Wind magic. This will likely stagger you back so be sure to dodge-roll backward, away from the impact zone.

This one may take a while but once you get used to the timing of attacks, it’s all about knowing when to dodge-roll into him and when to dodge-roll back. The combos are tricky, the Black Wind magic is quite bad and the rush attacks can be a pain. Watch for Black Wind’s tells (like his foot raising up off the ground) and try to play aggressively.

Rewards: Cloud Step Spell, 1049 XP, 3x Yarn.

With Black Wind King defeated (for now) open the box just behind him and to the right. It holds 1x Agate Jar. There’s also a bunch of pots shining gold in this room. Break them open to collect 1x Awaken Wine Worm.

When you’re ready, leave the cave interior and follow the pathway higher up the mountain.

Once you squeeze through the gap in the wall, ret up at the nearby shrine and be prepared for a big fight ahead. First though, make your way up the mountain. There will be some archers here firing fire arrows so be sure to use your Deflecting (L2) to evade the worst. At the end of this path, you’ll find another Shrine up and to the right.

Before you reach there though, if you explore the area on the way up, you’ll find another little chest holding 1x Celestial Nonary Pill and a larger chest, guarded by a Wolf, that holds Blood of the Iron Bull upgrade, and 3x Stone Spirit.

When you’re ready, follow the path all the way up the stone steps, past the Shrine on the main path, and prepare for a big fight.

Now, it is worth bearing in mind here that you want to have completed everything in Chapter 1 before moving past this area. Although there is Fast Travel to previous locations, Black Myth basically locks each Chapter so once you’ve completed a chapter, you can’t return to these areas. For that reason, do be sure to finish any optional bosses, collect everything you want to and be happy you’ve grinded the levels and levelled up as much as possible before continuing on.

Once you’ve done all that, it’s time to crack on to the big boss of the chapter. Climb up the steps, enter the fiery shrine courtyard and lets fight.

Boss Fight – Black Bear Guai

Black Bear Guai is not dissimilar to Lingxuzi, in terms of attack patterns and the way you need to approach this fight. Black Bear is extremely predictable in its movements and it also has some very obvious wind-ups as well.

However, complicating matters here is the fact the arena is on fire. This is one of those fights you want to try and stay as close to Black Bear as possible (and, consequently, stick to the middle of the pathway too), despite the temptation to back up and be reactive rather than proactive. Black Bear also has teleport attacks so be mindful of all of this beforehand.

In terms of tactics, Immobilize as quickly as you can because this is going to be a big fight and you’ll be able to use that a few times to get an extra few Combos in. Furthermore, Red Tides is a good option but Black Bear is unlikely to be Burned so focus more on heavy attacks until your stamina runs out and you de-transform. The worst attacks are as follows:

  • Belly Flop – After turning into black smoke, Bear will suddenly re-appear in mid-air and splash down. Sprint around in a circle and when you see it appear, be sure to dodge-roll backwards.
  • Three-strike combo – Bear will slash down on the ground, then diagonally up, then finally hit the ground with both paws. Dodge roll past all three, then attack from behind.
  • Four-strike combo – A four-strike variation to the above move; this one is slightly slower but ends with a massive belly-flop. There’s a great time to hit a combo here as Bear will take a while to get up. Cloud Step is great to use here, as it’ll serve as the perfect Decoy, allowing you to move in for an easy combo.

Once Bear hits the midway point of the fight, it’ll start using a lot more Fire-based attacks. While the first half is mostly aggression and using big strength and attacks, the second half of this fight combines that with magic. Now, if you gained the Fireproof Mantle from the secret boss of the chapter, now is a great time to use it. It not only unleashes heavier attacks in the combos, it also negates a lot of fire damage too, so it’s a good choice here.

Otherwise, watch out for these attacks:

  • Flaming Geysers – Bear will slam both paws on the ground, hold that position and then launch geysers that erupt up around the arena. Watch the ground and avoid the flaming spots. Don’t move in to attack, just dodge around.
  • Flaming Black Smoke – Bear’s teleporting skills now use the same nasty techniques that Black Wind King used in that fight, where it’ll swing like a pendulum around the arena, trying to hit you. Keep on the move and dodge-roll to the sides when you see it launch at you.

The rest of the fight though will play out very similarly to the first phase of the fight. Be mindful that Bear’s attacks will almost always be fire-based now and you can have burn inflicted if you’re not careful.

Watch your stamina too from sprinting around so much, and try to attack from behind. Don’t get ready with these attacks late on, especially as Bear can hit especially hard when you’re least expecting it. His combos are deadly if they catch you, and he can spin quite quickly while you’re behind him.

This is especially true because one of the four-strike combos will end with a stomp that will spew fire your way. So watch out for that. Eventually though, he’ll go down, and with it, a final cutscene.

With the Boss defeated, it’s now time to move onto the new chapter.
