Whiteclad Noble (Boss Fight) |
Back Hills
From the Shrine, head down the steps until you come to a wolf just chilling by a pond. After dispatching this foe, take a left turn and head on up into the cave. Don’t be alarmed by the Horse Guai on the throne, he’s just chilling and won’t attack. Phew!
Here, you’ll find 1x Meditation Spot right on the ground too.
After resting up, continue along the path until you come to a few more enemies. Now, you want to hug the right-hand side of the map by the ruined stone statue, where you’ll find a chest holding 317x Will and 3x Yarn.
Continue back on the main path and as you curl round to the left, you’ll come to a pool of water and a stairwell leading up to the left. Inside the pool are a few enemies and a green Will wisp, but there’s another partway up the stairwell too. When you reach the waterfall, head left through the tunnel and you’ll find another green Will wisp there.
Head to the top of the stairwell, and across the wooden bridge. Don’t turn right through to the Shrine just yet though. Instead, head to the right and open the chest in the gazebo. This holds 1x Tiger Subduing Pellets, 1x Antimiasma Powder and 1x Terrifying Decoction.
There’s a guardian in front of the Shrine when you continue back on the main path, so be sure to use Immobilize here and dispatch this foe. He has a few combos and a well-timed strike or two but for the most part, shouldn’t cause too many problems. Just to the left of the Shrine is a house; destroy the barrels inside for some bonus Will.
Snake Trail
Just to the right of the Shrine, head up the steps to the fork in the road. Here, you want to go right to begin with. This will trigger another cutscene, which unlocks The Blessed Gourd, allowing you to absorb extra Wills.
If you want to backtrack, the extra Wills can be located at:
- Under the first bridge in Front Hills
- Inside the arena where the Guangzhi fight too place
- At the Guanyin Temple entrance by the shrine
- Near the waterfalls in Bamboo Grove
To the left, you’ll find a passage that leads deeper into the Snake Trail. There are new foes here to tackle that come in two variants. Ones with skin and skeletal remains. For now, we’re focusing on the Snake Patrollers. These can (and usually do) inflict Poison if they get too many hits in.
A good idea is to either Immobilize early, or really learn their combos so you can dodge their jabs and hit back with a charged Heavy Attack. One of the better skills to gain early on allows you to Sprint and charge a Heavy Attack at the same time and this is perfect fodder for these Snake Patrollers.
In the next area, you’ll have a bunch of skeletal snakes to tackle. These can easily go down in a single Light Combo but be careful as there’s three of them and they can also inflict poison too.
In the next section, you’ll have a choice of two paths. The first leads down a ramp and then curls round to the left, heading into a large arena. However, as this is just basically one big circle, you want to either:
- Take the ramp down then curl round to the right
- Jump off the cliff and land in the water
Either way, you definitely want to head right, although there is a boss fight here. it’ll be worth it, don’t worry!
Optional Boss – Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang |
||
This Yaoguai Toad, Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang, certainly makes a splash and it hits quickly, so don’t even bother with your Heavy Attacks. Instead your best friends here are Immobilze and the Light Combo. Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang has some quick attacks, and one of his favourites involves smacking his back-legs at you if you’re behind him. He’ll do this twice. Make sure you stay at his left or right side for the duration of the fight if you can. Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang has a series of slashes with both arms that propel him forward, each ending with a leaping splash attack. He’ll then do a little sidestep and reposition. After the splash is another great opportunity to strike. Get familiar with these swipes because he’ll use a series of three-hit combos as well. Furthermore, there’s a fast-moving belly-attack too, where Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang will back up, put his arms to his chest and then lunge at you. The best way to avoid this is to use a combination of sprinting and dodging to the side. The final attack is actually quite an easy one to fight through. When Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang sticks his tongue out and flicks it back and forth, it has a big reach but only at the front of his body. As a result, he’s prone to combos from the side and back when he enacts this attack, and as he can’t cancel it, you should be able to get a few good strikes in. Be sure to watch out for his little minions too and bide your time to strike. Eventually, he’ll go down. Rewards: Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang Spirit, 1x Tadpole, 482x Exp, 2x Yarn and 394x Will. |
With the Toad down, follow the stream around, through the cave and you’ll circle back to that earlier ramp mentioned earlier after dropping down the two ledges.
This large arena plays host to a fair few enemies, both the skeletal Snake Warriors and the standard Snake Patrollers. Depending on which end you arrived in, at the far end of the arena you’ll find a gap to head through (pictured below).
It’s up to you how much time you spend here but defeating a lot of these enemies will give you a good chunk of Will and Exp Points which could be handy for what’s ahead.
Boss Fight – Guangmou |
||
Guangmou plays out similarly in style to the optional Guangzhi fight from the Forest of Wolves. In terms of attacks though, Guangmou definitely requires a slightly different tactic to take him down. Be sure to pick up some anti-poison medicine from the Shrine before tackling this one because Guangmou likes to inflict poison from a poison breath attack, which will look like vomit and hit from the front. Lovely. The first attack of the fight usually begins with Guangmou jumping in the air and launching projectiles your way. Be sure to use L2 (LT) to deflect these, as this move will come in very handy here. Be aware that Guangmou uses another variation to this, which includes a line of missiles thrown your way. You can Deflect these but you need to make sure you’re facing the right direction and that can be tricky given Guangmou likes to teleport around a lot. The final projectile attack will see Guangmou jump up in the air and burst out a bunch of projectiles which will hit the ground. Just be sure to dodge-roll out the way of these. If you get too far away from Guangmou, he’ll launch some wind attacks your way (either a tornado in the spot you’re standing or a shockwave wind attack) or he’ll bring on a bunch of snakes that will hit you with a constant stream of poisoned projectiles. The only warning you’ll get for this is him shouting “Boys!” so when he does, be prepared to move and keep sprinting and dodge-rolling as best you can. As you may have guessed by now, given all these ranged attacks, the best way to fight Guangmou is by getting up close and personal. Immobilize is great for this, although the close Heavy Attacks can be difficult to land given Guangmou’s tendency to teleport around the arena. Make sure you stay locked on and focus almost exclusively on Light Combos. Your Red Tides attack (if you’ve unlocked it) is also another great option but focus on the Heavy Attacks for this as they close the gap to Guangmou quite drastically. This is particularly handy to use if you’re either low on health, about to succumb to a big combo or are poisoned Transforming negates all status effects, which is handy, and you may even inflict Burn if you do enough attacks to Guangmou. You can also use the Wandering Wight’s Spirit Attack too, if you’ve unlocked it, but largely this fight comes down to mastering the projectile deflections. Deflect and dodge these, and make sure you’re up close to attack Guangmou for the win. Rewards: 700xExp, 2x Yarn, 1x Blood of the Iron Bull, 524x Will & Guangmou Spirit. |
With Guangmou defeated, there’s a Shrine just up the stairwell to the right but before you go there, head on up the steps ahead of you and Ring the Bell. This is the second Bell ready for our Secret Boss.
Return up the Stairwell mentioned earlier to the Shrine and continue forward on the path. There is a slight deviation to the left to grab some resources, which include yellow flowers hanging from a tree called Luojia Fragrant Vine. Make sure you pick this up.
Once that’s done, you’ll come to a wooden bridge. Defeat the Snake Patroller here, open the chest on the left to grab 5x Piece of Gold, and then head right, into the cave to talk to our new NPC.
The Shen Monkey is quite useful and will Upgrade your Drinks and Gourds, allowing you to use your Gourd more often, or even buy extra drinks here to aid you in battle. It’s a good idea to Upgrade your Gourd while you have the chance, because another tough boss is coming up.
When you’re ready, leave the Cave, exiting just left of the Shen Monkey, and follow the path along until you come to a watery shrine.
Whiteclad Noble
Boss Fight – Whiteclad Noble |
||
Phase 1Out of all the fights we’ve faced up until this point, Whiteclad Noble is the one that’s going to test your resolve the most. Right off the bat, this is a two-phase fight, and the key goal here is to take as little damage in Phase 1 as you can, because Phase 2, although similar, ups the aggression and speed of attacks. Straight away, don’t sprint toward the Noble. Save your stamina! Stand still and wait for him to attack you. Every fight begins in the same way, with Noble rushing at you and leaping in the air for a jumping strike. Dodge roll through when he lands and Immobilize immediately. Move in for a Light Combo strike. This is a long fight, and a quick combo in this early is a good way of getting a headstart on proceedings. After this, Noble will use a variety of different moves that you’ll need to memorize. He favours a four and five-strike combo, with swinging swipes that can do big damage if they hit. The movements for each have the same length of time between strikes so you should be able to time your dodges. He also has a wind-up swinging strike, where he’ll crouch and then launch his staff across in a 360 degree arc. At a distance, Noble will use a couple of watery strikes, including a three-cut strike that will launch vertical projectiles in your direction. There’s also another variation that will see vertical shockwaves (usually about five or six) sent in your location. Finally, if you’re very far away, Noble will use a watery shockwave in a big arc around himself to try and hit you, and then use a devastating spinning strike, where he’ll spin on his pole and then hit. Even if you’re quite far back, he’ll bridge the gap in distance very quickly using this, so watch out. Each of these attacks have their own weakness, and its a good idea to get up close and personal as quickly as possible. If you have Red Tides, use this early on too because Noble speeds up his strikes and ferocity when down to around 25% health. This way, if you use it early enough, you may be able to get enough strikes in to inflict Burn, which will do extra damage over time. The best times to hit are after the combos, and if you can time your dodges through them, then you’ll be able to get a good Light Combo in, with the final strike breaking any combo that Noble may be in the middle of. Eventually you’ll manage to get the timing down, but it may take a few goes to really get right. Keep at it and you should get him down. Phase 2After depleting his health, Whiteclad Noble will be back, in his monstrous “final form”. The attack patterns here are very similar to the first, but Noble’s longer body makes him unpredictable. He’ll move around the arena a lot more, even diving underwater and popping up. His circular arc move is deadlier too, as he’ll use his spear under the water to confuse you. Immobilize as soon as you can and move in for a full Light Combo strike. If Red Tides is available, use this as well, although do be aware that Noble’s aggression is upped in this phase so it’s unlikely you’ll get as many hits in. The only new attacks to watch out for are a boomerang move, where he’ll throw his spear forward at you and then pull it back, and a couple of big lunges that usually come if you’re quite far away from Noble. Be sure to stay nice and close to this guy and Dodge-roll through the attacks. At a distance, Noble is unpredictable and it’s hard to gauge exactly when he’s going to lunge at you, catching you off-guard. Do be sure to use your Relic Summon too, as Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang can be handy, swiping across the arena with four hits from his tongue. Similarly, Guangmou’s poison snakes is quite useful in Phase 2 but given the speed that he moves around, the effectiveness of this is debatable. This will be a tough fight so be sure to take some breaks if you’re dying a lot. That muscle memory will eventually kick in so try to save as much HP as possible for the second phase, and be sure to stay close to Noble for much of this fight, dodge-rolling toward, rather than away, from this tough boss. Eventually, he’ll go down. Rewards: 1049 xEXP, 1x Jade Fang, 701x Will and 1x Stone Spirit. |
After the fight, stay in the water and follow the path to the left. At the end is a Bell; ring it. We’ll tackle the secret boss in a separate guide HERE (coming soon), but once you’ve done that, head on inside the cave and straight to the first Shrine ahead.
