Night of Lemons
Episode 6 of Berlin picks up with Berlin comforting Camille at her house. Camille nearly doubts her husband until Berlin brings up François’s desire to be a dad. She starts thinking there is no possible way her husband was planning a heist while thinking about being a future dad. She starts to think about the possibility that François might be innocent.
Berlin tries to steer her back to the land of doubts, but she insists he is innocent. She reveals that she had decided to leave François but can no longer do that. She must stay and help him prove his innocence.
Meanwhile, Lavelle pressures François to admit guilt and give up his accomplices before it is too late. The man insists he is innocent but is willing to help with the investigation. Lavelle doesn’t buy his story and asks the judge to deny him bail and freeze his accounts. She also asks for his assets and properties to be seized. She is determined to get back the jewels and feels François is being unreasonable in refusing to admit his guilt.
The police set up a nationwide search operation, and Cameron, Roi and Damián are the first to come across them. Roi immediately panics and tries to get out of the RV, but Damián asks him to get his head in the game or enjoy prison. In the end, they perfectly play the role of a grieving family. The police ask some questions, like why the family is travelling, and they explain they are on a farewell trip.
The police argue that the family is not allowed to transport or dispose of ashes. The gang is counting on the police to have mercy on a grieving family and let them go. However, the police insist on searching the RV, and Cameron takes off running carrying the urn with their alleged dead mom.
After an intense chase that ends with Cameron nearly getting shot, she stops, and the police open the urn to find only ashes. The police feel horrified by their actions and allow the family to continue their trip.
Damián then calls Bruce and Keila and orders them to alight the bus at the next stop and head to the woods. Given the heavy police presence, they will have a better chance of escaping by avoiding the roads. Keila and Bruce follow his instructions to the letter, but she is still angry with Bruce and refuses to talk to him. In the meantime, Damián, Roi and Cameron hide in a local camp. They start by creating an escape route in case they are caught.
Meanwhile, Berlin reflects on his relationship with Camille and decides to stay indefinitely. Roi calls him to update him and learns he is still in Paris. He comes clean about the missing jewel but never mentions Cameron’s role in the incident. Roi says he did it because he was angry at Berlin. Berlin is understanding and commends him for coming forward. He apologises to Roi, and they talk about his relationship with Camille.
Berlin is frustrated that Camille only sees the good in François. He says that by framing François, they put him on a pedestal in her eyes. To change this, Berlin offers her money to hire the best lawyer in Paris and free her husband. Of course, Camille is moved beyond words over how kind and considerate Berlin is. She says he is a one-of-a-kind lover, and Berlin basks in all her praises, talking about never kicking a man when he is down. She invites him to visit François in jail.
At the same time, the police find the car and arrest the guy who won it in a race. The man gives the police a perfect description of Roi and his tattoos. He tells Lavelle that the man and the lady are Spanish. To this effect, Lavelle calls Europol to ask for help.
Roi and Cameron get closer while camping. Meanwhile, their new ‘dad’, Damián, meets a new woman who is moved by his widow story. She offers him a homemade drink, and he gets wasted by himself. He can’t stop thinking about his wife and calls her. Unfortunately, the new lady overhears the conversation and realises his wife is not dead, as he said. Damián asks for a second chance and loses his cool when his wife refuses to take him back. He accuses her of cheating, and she hangs up on him.
On the other hand, Bruce and Keila experience heavy rainfall that forces them to share one tent. However, Keila becomes more attracted to Bruce as he lies shirtless beside her. After the rain subsides, she heads out to pee and is bitten by an asp viper. Bruce hurriedly gives her first aid and tries to get her help. He carries her on his back and tries to get to the hospital as she is having an allergic reaction to the snake venom.
The episode ends with the return of the formidable Alicia Sierra, Deputy Inspector Europol Spain. She is working on the case with Lavelle.
The Episode Review
It is good to see Nawja Nimri on our screen, even though we just saw her in Holy Family season 2. Hopefully, she will bring some life into this show because it has been disappointing. It will be interesting to see how she works with Lavelle and if Alicia Sierra can solve this case. Unlike Money Heist, the story of the gang doesn’t lure us in. To be perfectly honest, we want them to get caught, and I will be rooting for Sierra in this one!
With two chapters left, the story needs to pick up steam or end up being the worst spin-off of the decade! Even with Keila’s life being in danger and Damián caught in a lie, the suspense build-up continues to lack. The show’s tension lost its way in episode 1, and it might as well be more of a comedy than a thriller. Sadly, even in this case, the light moments fail to pack a punch.
