Beastars Final Season Part 1 Ending Explained – Does Legoshi survive?

Beastars Plot Summary

As Beastars reaches its Season 3 – Final Season Part 1 – the world of anthropomorphic animal students dips more into the adult world all the time. In Season 1 we meet lone grey wolf Legoshi, a high school student and star of the back-stage. Quiet and introspective, Legoshi spends his time trying to understand others and control his instinctive carnivorous urges.

In fact, the entire world of Beastars swirls around the constant tension between carnivores and herbivores as they try to live in the same space. As one of the last few integrated schools, safety and respect are a priority. But by Season 3, even Cherryton Academy gives in to societal pressure – after several herbivore students have been devoured – and segregates its students as well, including our hero’s safe place, the theater club.

Unfortunately, by Season 3, Legoshi has quit school to ground himself after the events of Season 2. And while Haru is accepted at University, Legoshi quits school, taking a job at an Udon shop. Even though Legoshi has pulled out of the world, to a degree, in Season 3 the world just won’t let him go as he’s dragged into one dangerous situation after another.

In this Season, Louis too plays a significant role, returning to his family to heal after Season 2 but then quickly finding himself forced into the role of heir and presented with the arranged marriage he’d been anticipating. He too gets dragnetted back into circumstances related to his past and intertwines once again with Legoshi. The world of Beastars is never dull, as animals fight their urges and prejudices while the underworld works to subvert a peaceful society in the name of business. Sound familiar?

Ending Explained

Why does Legoshi remove himself from his school, friends and Haru?

When Legoshi disappears, he drops out of school and disconnects his phone. At the same time, he’s still recovering from the after-effects of eating Louis’ leg in S2. The ‘meat hangover’ can last for up to 6 months, with him craving meat uncontrollably. So, he removes himself from society cold turkey to keep others safe. Perhaps he doesn’t want to have to explain his nightly freakouts as well.

How does Legoshi discover that Kines is dangerous?

When dealers try to offer a can of Kines to Legoshi, because of his meat withdrawal and acute sense of smell, he can instantly detect that herbivore bones and flesh are among the ingredients. And quickly declines.

Why does Legoshi avoid his grandfather, Gosha?

He’s embarrassed to tell his beloved grandfather, Gosha, that he now has a criminal record and because of personal circumstances had to drop out of school. It’s not that he won’t tell him but in his Legoshi way, he doesn’t quite know how to break the news.

What is the Beastar?

Someone awarded the title to unite and protect both herbivores and carnivores. While S1 led us to believe it’s a recognition bestowed, by S3 we see it’s more a civil service job. At least the current Beastar, Yahya, treats it that way.

How does Gosha know The Beastar?

Gosha was crime fighting partners with Yahya in their youth, before Yahya was named the Beastar. And before Gosha married Legoshi’s grandmother.

Why does Legoshi have sympathy for Melon?

The son of a mixed breed animal, he has a natural sympathy for people who don’t fit into one group or another. Once he gets the idea in his head that Melon must be lonely, he can’t help but think of his deceased mother.

Why do the lions of Shishigumi help Louis?

To them, he’s still a member of their pride, even though he walked away from the gang. They all recognize that life was better under Louis’ leadership.

Does Legoshi survive?

Legoshi’s fate is left uncertain as he’s pushed off a cliff by Melon. We see him tied to chair with a rock weighing it down. But Legoshi has survived death before. Can he do it again? We’ll have to wait til Part 2 to find out.
