Based on a True Story – Season 2 Episode 3 Recap & Review

Relapse

Based on a True Story Season 2, episode 3 starts with another woman getting murdered. Once Ava sees the news, she assumes that Matt is at it again and confronts him immediately. Matt denies it and claims he was sleeping on her sofa. Tory comes to his defence, and even Nathan gives him the benefit of the doubt. However, Ava is determined to prove them wrong. Later, when Nathan reveals he didn’t deactivate their webcam, they watch the footage and see Matt sneaking out. Ava brings this latest evidence to Tory, who insists her man is innocent and takes offence that Ava doesn’t believe her.

To distress, Ava decides to clean out their basement and turn it into her office. She is worried that they are running out of money. They only have $20,000 in savings and she needs to get back to work soon. She is set on renewing her real estate license. Later, she meets with Drew and vents about Tory’s bad boyfriend. Drew advises her to help her sister see the light at any cost. Drew gets a call from her boss and leaves. However, she says she might be up for drinks later.

Elsewhere, Nathan takes memorabilia from his career to Christa’s charity drive, but she turns him down. Nathan is even more offended when she says they are actioning a match with his arch nemesis, Danny Merrick.

Meanwhile, Ava drops by Tory’s place and gives her a doll with a nanny cam. She spends the night watching it, hoping to find Matt in action. Immediately Matt leaves in the middle of the night, Ava wakes up Nathan, and they follow Matt to a club. However, Matt spots and confronts them. He explains that he comes to the club to throw axes with a new friend called Nick. As they talk, the news reports that another man was murdered six hours ago. With this new revelation, it becomes clear that Matt is not the killer. Of course, Matt is heartbroken that someone is trying to take away his legacy.

The next day, Ava joins Tory at her cake testing meeting and tries to apologise. Tory asks Ava to find a life and stop spying on her. So Ava turns to her crime watch past. She sees a video about the last victim and sneaks into the apartment to see the crime scene. While she is there, Drew shows up and Ava hides. However, she is shocked when she realises her new friend is a detective.

The two later meet up for drinks, and Drew reveals she is a homicide detective, but she keeps it low-key. On the other hand, Ava pretends she is not one of those crime freaks Drew hates. Drew also opens up about her determination to arrest the Westside serial killer. She reveals that the Westside killer has been changing his pattern lately. He even left a rosary on one of the latest victims. When Drew leaves to change her kid’s diaper, Ava takes photos of the case files in Drew’s bag.

As for Nathan, he hangs out with Matt and Nick at the axe-throwing club. He can’t seem to get the hang of it. Matt notices that Nathan seems angry and asks about it. Nathan tells him about the auction, and they decide to teach Christa a lesson and prove Nathan still has skills. Under the misguided influence of Matt, Nathan ends up putting up all the money in their savings accounts.

After her interesting meeting with Drew, Ava returns home and tries to figure out the puzzle. After a while, she realises that the new serial killer is copying famous killers. The episode ends with someone walking outside Ava’s house.

The Episode Review

Ava is playing with fire, and sooner or later, she is going to get hurt. I think Drew is onto Ava and is intentionally riling her up by telling her a few details about the case. She is probably the person we saw in that last scene. If it is the copycat serial killer, let us hope Ava doesn’t strike up a friendship with him too.

I find it concerning that in a time when women are being killed all over the globe, someone makes such a show. Honestly, Tory’s character is the most off-putting. It sickens me how she defends Matt. Don’t get it twisted. This show is revolting, but Tory is too much to take. Then we have Nathan, his friendship with Matt, and how he secretly wants Matt to slip and kill someone again.
