Barbie
Toys based on movies are commonplace but movies based on real-life toys? There aren’t many. Trolls, Transformers, GI Joe, and The Lego Movie spring to mind but can you think of any others? Let us know in the comments if you can!
This summer, Barbie is getting her own movie courtesy of Oscar-nominated writer/director Greta Gerwig.
If you have been looking forward to Barbie’s first big-screen adventure, here is everything we know about this upcoming movie.
What is Barbie about?
The movie will tell the story of the titular doll who decides to leave Barbieland after having an existential crisis. She sets off to the real world to find true happiness, alongside Ken who stows away in her pink bubble gum-coloured car!
That’s what we can gather from the trailer. But as to what the movie is really about, we aren’t quite sure. Yes, it’s a fish out of water comedy about a talking, walking Barbie doll and the challenges she encounters in the human world. But as this is a Greta Gerwig movie, we imagine it will have important things to say about identity, being true to yourself, and bodily self-acceptance.
When is Barbie being released?
Barbie will be released into cinemas on July 21 2023. There are rumours that the movie might be available to watch on Max (formerly known as HBO Max) shortly after its big screen release but we don’t have confirmation of that at this stage.
Who is in the Barbie cast?
Margot Robbie stars as the road-tripping Barbie and joining her in the cast is Ryan Gosling as Ken.
There is more than one Barbie and Ken in the movie, of course.
Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, and Issa Rae will also be playing Barbie in one form or another, and Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, and new Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa are just some of the actors who will be playing a version of Ken.
Michael Cera, Will Ferrell, Connor Swindells (who starred alongside Gatwa in Sex Education) and Jamie Demetriou also have roles in the movie.
Will there be a Barbie 2?
A sequel to Barbie has not been announced but if this performs well at the box office, we expect a follow-up movie will happen at some point.
There are dozens of other Barbie movies that have already been released, however. So while they don’t tie into this upcoming comedy, you might still be interested in watching them if you’re a fan of the popular Mattel doll. Of course, these are animated movies that have been made for younger Barbie fans, but you don’t necessarily need to be under 7 if you want to be spirited away on a Barbie-led adventure.
