Bank Under Siege – Season 1 Episode 5 Recap, Review & Ending Explained

Moment of Truth

Bank Under Siege episode 5 picks up where we left off, with the police ordering all hostages to lie down on the street. Paco starts checking all the hostages one by one. At first, Paco is unable to recognise Jose since he is in glasses.

He, however, manages to get Jorge and the other robbers. He later checks the bus holding the hostages and spots Jose by looking at his shoes.

What happens after Jose’s arrest?

The news of the successful operation reaches the President, and he changes his mind about resigning. The General gives a press conference and clarifies that no Civil Guard officer was involved in the heist. He says it was a group of good-for-nothing robbers who used Terejo to confuse and distract the police to get enough time to steal all the money in the bank’s vault. He insists that the heist had nothing to do with politics.

Meanwhile, Jose sings like a canary in the interrogation room after Paco gives him his favourite cigarettes. He tells Paco that the main goal of the heist was to steal the documents in the safety box for Manglano.

He explains how Manglano tricked him into thinking they can escape through the sewers after finishing the job. They were supposed to steal the money in the vault and go live their best lives. Paco doesn’t believe Jose, but he is unable to investigate further since he is ordered to take a vacation.

What happens to Maider?

Her article on how the bank robbers were mere robbers and not a political extremist group gives her great credibility and Isobel is happy. However, a few days later, the President addresses the Parliament and says that Jose claims a man named Antonio Luis hired him. Apparently, Luis supports far-right ideologies and used Jose to shake up things in the government. This ends up destroying Maider’s credibility and Isobel asks her to stop investigating the case.

However, Maider refuses to give up. She recruits Berni to help her find Paco. Paco tells them everything that Jose said but says he is unsure who to believe. Maider continues to investigate and talks to the hostages, the General and even friends of Jose.

She gets more confused as everyone tells her different things. Later, Paco joins her in the investigation, but Manglano gets wind of their plan. He sneaks into Maider’s house and warns her to stop. He asks her to wait for a few years when the truth won’t matter and she can write a book. Maider refuses to listen and nearly dies when Paco’s car gets bombed.

Manglano wants Felipe Gonzalez, the current Vice President to win the upcoming election and bring radical reforms in the country. This is why he went to great lengths to get the documents which contained the names of the provisional government officials after the coup d’état. In exchange, Manglano became the Director of CESID.

How does Bank Under Siege end?

Manglano makes a deal with him to keep quiet and change his statement. He offers to protect Jose’s family in return.

The Divorce Act is passed and Felipe wins the election. After 2 years, the court sentences Jose to 38 years in prison. He escaped after 8 years and still maintains his statement about Manglano is true. As for Manglano, he resigned in 1995 over a wiretapping scandal.

The Episode Review

The show is based on real events that happened in 1981 in Spain. However, the show struggles to tell the story in its entirety. By the end of the five episodes, we still have questions that the show never bothered to truly answer.

If you want to learn more about the events that happened in Spain in 1981, you are better off reading a history book. At some point, the series just goes on and on without any valid points.

This could have been better captured in a movie and I don’t get why Netflix turned it into a series. If you are looking for a thrilling heist series, skip this one!
