Jacob’s Place

Haunting Case – The Flesh is Weak

Making Your Choice

Jacob’s Place

From your starting position, head down and approach the clearing with the blue torch outside. Before you head in though, smash the barrels and you’ll find a basket holding 2x Pyrite and 5x Wild Chervil.

When you’re ready, proceed inside and you’ll find a strange guy called Jacob inside. I say strange, he’s got more than a few screws loose. When you talk to him, select “Who’s Ben” from the dialogue choices. Once you’ve finished speaking to him, you’ll start a new Haunting Case.

The Flesh is Weak

Haunting Case – The Flesh is Weak

After talking to Jacob to trigger this Haunting Case, be sure to select this from the Haunting Cases Menu to follow, if you’re not already.

Inside Jacob’s abode, inspect: the rotting meat, the maggoty bed and check out Jacob’s Bible on the barrel next to his desk.

On the barrel next to the exit, opposite from here,  you’ll also find some rope, which Jacob will let you take.

With the rope in hand, we can now descend into the valley.

Find Benedict Sloughton

Leave the cabin and head along the route through the tight gap between the two rock faces. Take a left at the fork in the road, hop over the broken bridge and press A (X) next to the little rock peg to find a way down (area pictured below).

When you descend, the quickmyst will be too thick for Red to see so Switch to Antea. Head all the way along the linear path, hop over the fallen log and at the next broken bridge (to your right) make sure you approach the culprit for causing the quickmyst, this weird rock sculpture sticking out the ground. Destroy it by approaching and pressing A (X).

After defeating the enemies, switch to Red and “Inspect the Fog’s Origin” on the ground. Next, perform the Harkening. It turns out Benedict was pushed off the edge by Jacob, explaining Jacob’s pent-up guilt and skittish behaviour.

In order to find Benedict’s body, hop back over the bridge again, and this time shimmy by the rock wall jut beyond this.

Drop down the next ledge and switch to Antea. You’ll find another Spectral clump in the corner which holds 4x Spectral Dust and 7x Pieces of Eight. Finally, you’ll find Benedict’s body on the ground. Press A (X) to inspect.

To find the tie that binds the ghost, climb back up the rope and return to Jacob’s abode.

Switch to Antea to find what you need quickly if you’re stuck, but otherwise, approach the desk and pick up the Bowl and Spoon. With this, approach the bedroll and select “Make-Manifest” for the ritual.

Talk to the ghost

Exhaust the dialogue with Benedict and then approach Jacob outside. He’ll explain more of his plight, including how hungry they both were and how it was difficult for them both. You can choose to reprimand Jacob here if you wish, or sympathize with his plight.

All of these little dialogue choices eventually lead to the biggest choice you’re going to make in the game. As mentioned before, there are multiple endings to Banisher: Ghosts of New Eden and how you handle each of these hauntings will add up to your chosen outcome.

Here, you’ll get the choice of either Blaming Jacob for the haunting (and murder), allowing Benedict to Ascend to the afterlife peacefully, or Banish him nastily to a rather unpleasant end. If Red is to bring Antea back to life, he’ll need to Blame the largest number of settlers so do bear that in mind.

It’s worth noting that you don’t have to Blame every single person to bring Antea back and similarly, you don’t have to Ascend every ghost to get the Ascend ending. It all accumulates toward the end.

Make your choice, and watch the final haunting scenes play out.

Make Your Choice

Once this has been completed, head inside Jacob’s abode and rest up at the campfire. Here, you’ll need to make your Oath to Antea. You can either choose to promise Antea an “Ascension” or “Resurrection“, depending on how you want to play.

With the Oath completed, this will also complete the quest as well.
