How to Pick a Prick
In Season 2 Episode 7 of Bad Sisters, Eva learns that Ian has made off with all the money from Blanaid’s saving accounts, which she had given him access to.
Ian has disappeared completely, but not before anonymously dropping off the flash drive that implicates the other Garveys in Angelica’s murder.
Houlihan arrests and questions Bibi, Becka, and Ursula, but can’t get anything out of them. Eventually, Loftus puts a stop to her questioning, saying Angelica has been found–alive. But Houlihan stews when he shuts down her remaining suspicions.
Eva picks up her sisters and shares with them that Ian played her and cleaned out Blanaid’s account. They realize they can’t call the guards because he knows everything. They theorize that Grace needed help with Ian’s blackmailing, not Angelica’s.
While Eva returns to alcoholism to cope, Ursula goes to apologize to Angelica, who is scared to see her. And who could blame her? She remembers getting on the boat with them but nothing after that.
Ursula tells Angelica how Ian fooled them, but is asked to leave by Roger. She runs into Houlihan on her way out, as the detective is going in to question Angelica, who reveals she never believed Ian had a dead sister.
Meanwhile, Becka tries to get information about Ian out of Joe, but they only end up fighting. Eventually, however, he comes around and tells them that Ian is a gambler.
Houlihan confronts Loftus at his retirement party about his lies. He confesses he initially stole the money so he could win custody of his daughter. Not caring, she nearly puts Loftus on full blast in front of everyone there. But seeing his daughter with him stops her.
By pitching it as a way of honoring Grace, the sisters are able to get Roger’s help finding Ian, and they head off to the horse races. There, they figure out Ian’s real name (Cormac).
Matt meets Becka to tell her he’s not willing to break up a family, and she’s okay with that. They were there for each other when they needed each other, and now it’s time to part ways. But first, Becka shares with him that she’s having a boy.
Eva is able to unlock Ian’s phone by inputting his lucky number 5. She learns where he lives and goes there to confront him. But a woman answers the door instead, claiming that she has recently moved in and that she doesn’t know Ian.
But once Eva leaves, we see that Ian does in fact still live there. The woman tells him he’d better sort things out, as he’d promised her these people would never come near their house or kids.
Later, Ursula asks Loftus for help finding Ian. He doesn’t want to help, but he lets slip about the money he found at Grace’s house.
Houlihan is also putting things together. She finds out that Ian is Sgt. Cormac Sweeney, an officer who left the force after investigating the death of a homeless man named Ian Reilly.
She also finds that Cormac had complaints against him of domestic abuse, embezzlement, and fraud. But the complaints had all been withdrawn and the investigations closed.
The episode ends with Eva learning that Ian has picked up Blanaid from school. She then rushes to Grace’s house, where Ian steps out to meet her.
The Episode Review
Nothing is surprising about what we’ve learned about Ian this episode, but the revelation of his repulsiveness hurts all the same.
Abuse takes on many different forms, and the Ian/Cormac situation just goes to show that the most manipulative predators are the charming ones. Season 1 showed what abusive men can get away with blatantly and publicly, in John Paul’s case. This season expands on the show’s characterization of abusers to show that, sometimes, the most dangerous person is right under your nose.
I’m interested to see how Houlihan will proceed with so much new information. The Garveys and Ian may be at an impasse with everything they know about each other, but the detective’s findings endanger all of them.
