Bad Monkey – Season 1 Episode 6 Recap & Review

Episode 6 of Bad Monkey begins with Yancy asking Ro for help. While he heads over, Neville goes to see the Dragon Queen for help. However, when he gets there, he ends up seeing Egg and Gracie together making love.

The monkey gives them away though, and Egg goes racing out after the kid. Egg does shoot him in the arm, but Neville manages to slip away. Egg returns to the queen but unfortunately, the moment is gone.

With Egg sexually frustrated, Gracie pores over a forged deed from Wendell but she shrugs off Ya-ya’s concerns when she asks about it. Gracie meets Egg at his bar not long after and wants a meeting with his boss.

Yancy heads back home, where he finds Bonnie with Cody. Turns out he’s been keeping an eye on her all this time as he thought Yancy was dangerous. Bonnie, ever the opportunist, latches herself to him and they decide to head over to a cabin together to lay low. Unfortunately, they’re not alone as Jim is there waiting for them. Bonnie ends up having a crisis of confidence in the peaceful tranquillity of the place, especially when she realizes Cody isn’t quite the man she thought he was.

While this is going on, the detective starts sniffing around Yancy’s pad, determined to find Bonnie. Given Bonnie is a fugitive and wanted (as is Yancy), she’s hot on the trail when she notices a photograph of the cabin.

Yancy meanwhile, heads over to Ro’s. He’s shocked though when he finds out he’s already called in Mendez. Yancy is arrested for the murder of Izzy. As he’s bundled in the back of the police car, Rosa drives past but Yancy has her just move along with a quick nod of the head.

At the station, Mendez is smug and shows up to antagonize Yancy. All of this stems from him being outed as a dirty cop and he’s not happy. Yancy offers up a better option for the detective – release him and work together to catch Nick Stripling, who’s the real culprit. Yancy even offers to let him take all the credit too.

Gracie gets her meeting with Nick and Eve. With the forged deed in hand, she sees right through their “relationship” and tells Eve in confidence that she knows all of this is a sham. When Egg leaves and Nick returns, he warns that if they step out of line she can destroy them. Disrespect is always personal and they should buy the land directly from her, not anyone else.

Rosa shows up to see Ro at the station and, speaking Spanish, tries to come up with a way to help out Yancy. However, she’s disgusted when she finds out that Ro was the one who set her up. Going it alone, she breaks into the hangar bay and starts looking about for evidence. When the little plane flies back in, she notices there are drugs being brought into the country, and knows she’s onto something.

As for Yancy, he admits to being in the apartment around the time Izzy was killed but tells the truth. His lawyer believes that it’s a grudge but unfortunately, the superiors believe there’s enough evidence to recommend the DA move forward with an indictment. Just before things kick off, Ro shows up and claims that Mendez hasn’t recorded the full statement from Mrs Blank, who actually saw someone else before who only had one arm. So naturally, Yancy is let go.

Meanwhile, Rosa goes on the hunt for evidence when the hangar bay is empty. When she checks the plane though, who should come out? None other than Neville.

While Bonnie continues on the run, evading the detective when she shows at the cabin, Gracie is grabbed by someone and bagged.

Episode Review

Bad Monkey returns with another average slice of drama. Honestly, this is becoming a trend right now with AppleTV+ shows in that they drag their heels and produce series that really don’t justify the runtime they’re given.

A sharper bit of editing would have really helped this series and this episode focuses on some of the least interesting characters in the show. Does anybody really care about Bonnie? Why should we matter what’s happening between her and Cody? And similarly, the realtor guy who’s just sorta here for comedy relief brings nothing to this one either.

It’s a shame because there’s definitely some stand out moments, but unfortunately nowhere near enough to justify the bloated run-time on this one. Hopefully next week’s episode will be an improvement.
