Episode 3
Episode 3 of Bad Monkey starts with Yancy and Rosa discussing their next move. They intend to go after Madeline and question her, since she’s super suspicious by running away from Yancy all the time. Interestingly, Neville is actually in the kitchen with his monkey and he crosses paths with Yancy here as he does his health inspection gig. He points out that the monkey in the cupboard is a point of contention but he lets them off by striking a deal with Neville.
Anyway, Rosa and Yancy catch up to Madeline. It turns out she has a rap sheet for selling drugs, explaining why she’s so jittery. He brings up Captain Keith and how Phinney was actually working on the ship. This is out of character, given Phinney never really did much work. Madeline eventually snaps and points out that Phinney set the arm up given how much money was involved with this.
There’s even a Cooler that it came in, labelled as Midwest Mobile Medical, which happens to be Nick Stripling’s company. Yancy gets set up with a shirt and tie, and ready to head on into the Midwest office to learn more. The place is a bit of a mess and it appears like whoever is inside, tried to leave in a hurry.
Although sweet-talking the security guy, Donald, seems to work, he’s good at his job and immediately realizes the sport SUV outside is not exactly a fed-approved vehicle and calls it in. Just before the officers bust them, the pair find the name of a doctor who approved prescriptions – Israel O’Peele.
After a close call outside the building, Yancy and Rosa show at O’Peele’s place. He’s jittery and the pair soon learn that Midwest Medical was all one big scam. Nick paid him 1000 per scooter prescription or even more, if they were having a good month.
He believes Eve and Nick were a good couple too, and as he talks, Yancy finds a brochure for Christopher’s Bahamian Resort, which he takes. Izzy is shocked when he finds out Nick and Phinney are both dead. This is enough for him to close up and not talk.
Meanwhile, Neville heads home after crashing with his sister for a while. Things don’t go well for him though as Christopher shoots at Neville for coming near his lot of land. Naturally, this brings him back to the Dragon Queen, demanding his money back. Ya-Ya is not convinced and wants Neville to have faith, something he’s lacking. Neville proves himself worthy though by giving up his monkey, Driggs, to get his home back. This is enough to show his true conviction.
Rosa and Yancy discuss Christopher and his resort. Yancy is convinced that he’s going to get his job back and is in a good mood, while Rosa points out that the severed arm bone shards definitely belong to Stripling. Yancy receives a call from Madeline in the middle of all this, who believes that she’s being followed. She’s not, as it turns out, but we’ll circle back to that later.
For now, Izzy O’Peele gets in touch with Yancy and decides he’s ready to talk after an earlier chat with Eve, where she blew him off completely. Ro tries to convince Yancy to stop this investigation when he bumps into him outside one of the restaurants he shut down. Naturally, the place is back up and running now thanks to dirty money, which only works to tick off Yancy even more.
Yancy visits Caitlin next and points out that she’s right – Eve did kill Nick. It seems like Caitlin has been paid off by Eve, given her nonchalant attitude, and Yancy lets his frustrations out before leaving.
Getting nowhere with Caitlin, Yancy next visits Izzy. However, he gets there too late as the guy has been shot dead. Even worse, Madeline isn’t answering her phone. Yancy rings Ro and asks for his help in finding her. As this is going on, Caitlin shows up to see Eve and decides that she can’t do this after all. She gets a gun and threatens her.
Neville breaks into Christopher’s office that night and finds a USB stick, which he takes. Unfortunately, Egg happens to be there. Neville threatens him with his gun, and manages to get away, but not before Egg warns that this is not going to end well for him.
In the midst of all this drama, everyone convenes over at Maddie’s workplace. She’s not dead, as it turns out, but there is another twist to this tale. It turns out Nick is still alive, and he shows up over at Eve’s place, missing an arm of course.
Episode Review
Alas, the plot thickens and here we see that Nick is not dead after all, which only links back into this whole insurance fraud scam. Quite how this ties into Christopher remains to be seen but it would appear that he and Nick are in collusion together. Are they in a polyamorous relationship? It’s clear that this big insurance scam is just part of something much bigger, which is probably linked in to the resort and the blood money.
Everything here is set up on a precarious knife-edge, and with deaths starting to pile up, it’s actually a nice twist that Madeline was not killed and they were wrong. However, she may still be being followed so we’ll have to wait and see.
For the time being though, Bad Monkey is just starting to step it up a gear and the ending hints that we’ve got plenty more drama to come in the weeks ahead.
