Asura – Season 1 Episode 7 Recap, Review & Ending Explained

Family

Episode 7 of Asura starts at the hospital. Jinnai is in a coma, and the sisters visit. They each contribute some money and give it to Sakiko to help with the hospital bill.

What happens to Sakiko?

Jinnai’s injury and coma drain Sakiko, especially when his mother blames her for Jinnai’s injury. The mother tells Sakiko that she pushed Jinnai to keep boxing even when she knew it was affecting his health because she did not want to give up a life of luxury. Sakiko has always put on a facade, especially in front of her sisters, to rub it in their faces because they did not believe in Jinnai in the beginning. Therefore, despite the mental exhaustion with the hospital bill piling up and worry about Jinnai, Sakiko does not open up to the sisters.

One night, she gets physically involved with a stranger. After finding out her identity, the stranger starts blackmailing Sakiko. He asks for a million in settlement. Sakiko is cornered and helpless. She finally decides to open up to Takiko about the situation. Despite their detachment, competition, and sort of enmity between them throughout the series, Takiko stands up for Sakiko.

Sakiko calls the stranger to the hospital, and Takiko takes the chance to berate him for taking advantage of a sad woman who is drowning in debt. This becomes the turning point between Takiko and Sakiko’s relationship.

Sakiko and her mother-in-law continue to take care of Jinnai. They move him to a general ward to cut costs since he stays in a coma for months. Ultimately, they one-day notice Jinnai’s toes moving, which means that Jinnai is regaining consciousness.

Does Kotaro end his relationship with Shoji?

Despite Kotaro and his mistress cutting communication when Fuji dies and Kotaro thinks that she is married, Tomoko’s son keeps calling Kotaro. They start having secret meetings at a restaurant where Kotaro helps the boy with homework and keeps him company. During one of these secret meetings, Kotaro learns that Tomoko has not married someone else.

Also, Takiko sees Kotaro with the boy during one of their meetings and confronts him about it. After the confrontation, Kotaro decides not to meet with Shoji again. However, Kotaro is eventually unable to stay away from Shoji as they have developed a strong bond and Shoji keeps calling him. However, we are uncertain whether Kotaro ended his relationship with Tomoko or they kept in contact through Shoji.

What happens to Tsunako?

Makiko receives a phone call one night informing her that Tsunako tried to commit love suicide. Makiko rushes over and visits Tsunako at the hospital. However, Tsunako was not trying to commit suicide; it was just a gas leak at the house and her married boyfriend was in the house. Takao and Makiko are concerned about Tsunako’s mental health and try to convince her to let her son move and stay with her after his marriage.

Tsunako holds that she is not too old and can still take care of herself. Even though Tsunako holds that she did not try to kill herself and her boyfriend, it becomes unclear later when Makiko asks her seriously, and all she does is smile. Regarding her relationship with her boyfriend, he runs from the hospital and back to his wife after the incident, and they are not seen together again. Makiko asks Tsunako how she felt when she woke up at the hospital and her boyfriend was not by her side. Tsunako says that all she wants is to spend time with her family, which she does happily for the rest of the episode.

What happens to Takiko?

Takiko and Katsumata’s relationship is the most heartwarming to watch in the final episode. Unlike Makiko, who hides her feelings, and Takao, who does not show much concern for Makiko, Katsumata is patient, and together they learn to open up and depend on each other. Katsumata supports Takiko when she struggles with Jinnai’s accident.

She takes her to the hospital to meet Sakiko and stands with her when she confronts the bully. Katsumata lets her air out her frustrations with her father after she finds out that he is still in contact with the mistress and the child. In the end, Takiko builds a gentle, loving family with Katsumata and they move into Kotaro’s house to stay with the ageing father and are expecting their firstborn.

Does Makiko find out about Takao’s affair?

Throughout the series, Makiko has struggled with the possibility of Takao having an affair. She thinks that the mistress is Akagi, Takao’s secretary. Makiko’s suspicion is thrown off when Akagi visits her at home to announce that she is getting married and wishes that Makiko could help her with the marriage arrangement. Akagi assures that she was never the mistress and does not know whether Takao has been cheating. However, Makiko feels like everything was a setup with Akagi trying to get on her good side so that her suspicions do not get in the way of her marriage.

Makiko has been keeping her feelings hidden and was not aware that it was affecting the family, especially their daughter Yoko. One day, she gets called at the local bookshop to pick up Yoko, who had tried to steal a book at the local bookshop. Yoko tells her mother that she wants to understand her and she should try to open up.

Therefore, Makiko decides to ask Takao about cheating the night after Akagi’s visit. Takao holds that he does not have a mistress, but Makiko is not convinced.

How does Asura end?

The final episode ends at Akagi’s wedding. Makiko and Takao attend the wedding. When Akagi and her husband light a candle to symbolise their love, Makiko whispers to Takao that she does not believe his words when he says that he has no other woman.

The Episode Review

The final episode does not conclusively resolve some of the gaps in the storyline. For instance, we are left wondering if Kotaro ended the relationship, which was the premise of the story or did they rekindle their connection in the end when he gets a suspicious phone call and hides in his room to answer it.

Although Jinnai’s toes move, we do not see him regain consciousness, so Sakiko’s fate is still unclear at the end. Regarding Tsunako’s scandalous relationship, we see the boyfriend rushing back to his wife after the gas leak, seemingly freaking out. However, we are not sure if they ended the relationship since they never said it. Also, we are not sure whether Takao had an affair or Makiko was just insecure.

Asura is worth the watch. It slowly introduces us to a dysfunctional family that despite the arguments and differences, they still stand with each other in times of challenges and happily share meals, chat, and bickering. The series is engaging and relatable, especially watching the sisters go through troubling times and get emotional as such saddening and confusing situations can happen to any of us.

The ending leaves us hoping for a second season where we can see Makiko resolve her suspicions about Takao’s infidelity. Also, we could get to see Jinnai possibly wake up from the coma and maybe restart his life. Tsunako can get a second chance at genuine love and watch Takiko get to build a family with Katsumata.
