Asaf – Season 1 Episode 5 “Escape” Recap & Review

Escape 

Episode 5 of Asaf begins with Asaf walking into a luxurious dinner party, only to find all the guests dead. They were taken out by gunmen, but what happened?

We circle back to a few hours before the party. Asaf takes Little Joe to his mother’s place and asks her to watch the kid. Nermin is suspicious, but Asaf doesn’t have time for her demeaning words. He hugs her and leaves after saying he couldn’t be like his brother.

In the meantime, Akif informs Cüneyt that the media has run the story of Asaf kidnapping Little Joe from the orphanage. The police already ran the number plates and discovered the car belongs to Nasuh. Cüneyt seems caught off guard by this information. On the other hand, Sema is shocked to see Asaf on the news being called a kidnapper.

Asaf calls the car shop manager, who has not watched the news yet, and asks for more cars. The manager asks when Asaf can meet with the boss, Irfan, to talk more about Payen Kuyern. Asaf insists he must have the cars first, and the manager happily obliges. Asaf then meets with Murat and tells him he is going against Payen Kuyern. Of course, Murat thinks Asaf is off his rockers but offers to help. Asaf asks Murat to take the kid to a retired police officer they used to know.

Later, Asaf drops by the showroom, and the manager explains that Irfan saw the news and is getting cold feet. Irfan wants Asaf to help him get out of the Payen Kuyern. He is also offended that Nasuh didn’t invite him to the organisation’s big event that night. The event is a surprise to Asaf, but he acts like he knows about it.

Asaf gets multiple cars of the same make as his and uses this to distract the police. While the police get dead ends with each car stop, Asaf prepares to infiltrate the upcoming event. Meanwhile, Cüneyt interrogates Ruya to find out how much she knows. She agrees to tell him everything without knowing he is one of the bad guys. Cüneyt delivers the list of informants to Nasuh and they plan their next move. Nasuh promises to deal with the informant and the betrayers, while Cüneyt handles Asaf. In return, Nasuh promises to give Cüneyt a big promotion.

Unfortunately, Murat gets into an altercation, and Asaf is forced to change his plans. He sends Mertem to get him a suit from a high-end shop using the Payen Kuyern card. Later that night, Asaf attends the event and calls the police to report himself. Nasuh sees him and talks about how the organisation has helped Asaf rise from a common taxi driver to be among their ranks. Asaf is shocked when he sees his brother, Aziz, at the function, too. After his speech, the police arrive in the building and arrest Nasuh. The guests don’t see Nasuh being taken away.

In a flashback, we finally learn the identity of Nasuh’s trusted man, Asil. Nasuh helped Asil after he was recently released from prison. Nasuh used Asil’s hard life experience as an orphan to manipulate him to be his lapdog.

He calls Aziz aside and scolds him for joining the organisation. As they talk, Asaf notices something is off and convinces his brother to leave the room. They head to the toilet and gunshots start filling the air. Asaf realises that  Nasuh is using the event to kill all the people who betrayed him. The gunmen kill everyone in the event, and Asaf goes back to help. He manages to overpower Asil and take him down.

Meanwhile, at the police station, Akif gets excited about finally arresting Nasuh. He is unaware of the deal between Nasuh and Cüneyt. Nasuh calls his lawyer and refuses to cooperate with the mediocre investigation. He plans to use his arrest as an alibi when asked why he survived the shooting at the event. Once Akif hears about the shooting, Nasuh denies any involvement. The only ones who survive are Aziz and Asaf. Aziz unknowingly tells the corrupt police about his mom, revealing the location of Little Joe. The police take Asil into custody, but he is miraculously released. Nasuh has Cüneyt deliver all the bodies from the event to Asil. Asil and his men bury the bodies in Servet’s construction land.

The following morning, Asaf goes to pick up Little Joe and is disappointed that his mom gave the kid to the police. However, it was not the police Nasuh who picked the boy. He and Little Joe are currently on their way to a ship. In a flashback, we learn that Nasuh is using Little Joe as collateral against Cüneyt. He calls Murat to deliver his old car, but Murat shows up driving the new car. The police get wind of it and arrest Murat.

In the meantime, Asaf returns to the car shop to pick up his old car. In the car, he finds a ringing phone. He picks it up and Cüneyt informs him that the police are on to him. He orders Asaf to drive the car to the boat with the load in the trunk and leave it beside the boat. Asaf checks the trunk and finds a bomb with a five-minute timer inside.

The Episode Review

This show keeps getting better with new twists in each episode. Cüneyt teamed up with Nasuh to get rid of the informant and the snitches. However, Nasuh went behind Cüneyt’s back to keep Little Joe alive as collateral against the corrupt officer. Now, Cüneyt is using Asaf to deal with Nasuh and the organisation once and for all. He wants Asaf to drive the bomb to the boat and kill everyone.

It is jarring how Nasuh continues to get away with murders like this. It makes no sense how all the bodies from the event were taken away. Are you saying that no one in the police force or media finds it strange that multiple people died and there are no bodies all of a sudden? I have to say, this part of the script feels too far-fetched.
