Apartment 7A Plot Summary
Apartment 7A is a psychological thriller film that follows the story of Terry Gionoffrio, an up-and-coming dancer in New York City in 1965 until she has an accident that seriously affects her foot.
As a consequence, Terry is left unemployed for months. Trying everything she can to heal her foot and land a job, she finally meets an elderly couple who helps her rent a room in an established elite apartment complex.
No sooner has she moved in than things take a turn for the worse with Terry’s hallucinations in the sinister scheme of things.
Why did the Castevets help Terry?
The Castevets, an elderly couple who claimed to have no children, initially seemed to help Terry as a form of goodwill after they learned about her difficulties in landing a role in a musical production.
However, it’s soon made clear that the Castevets had been a part of a satanic congregation and helped Terry in their goal to birth the son of the devil.
What happened to Terry after accepting the Castevets’ offer to move in?
The Castevets helped Terry get a spare room free of cost in their elite apartment building. Soon after moving in, Terry had a chance to talk to the man behind the musical production she’d auditioned for and been rejected from—Alan Marchand.
She soon begins hallucinating, and it seems that Alan might have spiked her drink. What seemed like a case of assault by Alan is later discovered by Terry as a satanic ritual.
While Terry was barely conscious on the night she met Alan in his room, she was taken to a hidden basement where the residents of the apartment performed a ritual to summon Satan and impregnate her with his child.
How did Terry’s foot heal?
In the film, Terry made a deal with the Castevets after she found out about being pregnant, where they promised her all the fame that she wanted in return for delivering the baby.
The story they told her was believable—that they were a childless couple who’d take care of the child and raise it while she chases her dream of becoming the most popular dancer.
This deal seemed to have worked as a contract with the devil, and Terry soon found her foot healing. She could even dance as she used to before.
As she grew more and more ambitious, the next step she desired was to become the main dancer. And voilà, on a certain day when Terry and her crew had been practicing, the main dancer suspiciously had an accident. The part was then given to Terry.
What’s the secret behind Apartment 7A?
After being on the road to success, Terry’s visions do not stop but only worsen. Tired, she visits a church where she finds out about the satanic congregation.
Later, she discovers that Roman Castevet’s father had been the leader of the congregation, with Roman being his heir and having the ability to summon Satan. Apartment 7A is the number of the apartment that they lived in, and where it all began and ended for Terry.
Why did Terry die?
In the last few scenes, the Castevets inform Terry that they are family. Terry finds that though she’d killed Alan, thinking he had been the father of the child, it was actually Satan.
Terry tries to kill the child in her womb, but it cannot be killed. Minnie Castevet tells her that being a vessel for the son of Satan was a role she was born to play.
Terry realizes that she cannot escape her fate alive, so she performs a dance for the last time, as she had mentioned that dance was her way to escape reality. During her sequence, she jumps out the window and dies.
What happened to the child after Terry died?
In the final scene of the film, the Castevets find a new victim, a woman called Rosemary, whose story continues in the iconic film Rosemary’s Baby.
From their reaction, it’s evident that the child they were rearing had died along with Terry, and now they needed a new vessel.
