Am I OK? (2024) Ending Explained – Does Lucy go with Jane to London?

Am I OK? Plot Summary

Coming out in your 30s is the focus of Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne’s Am I OK?, which is based on screenwriter Lauren Pomerantz’s own experiences. It follows Lucy (Dakota Johnson) as she struggles to come to terms with her sexuality later in life than most, all while reckoning with the potential loss of her newly-promoted best friend Jane (Sonoya Mizuno).

Is Brittany gay?

In realizing that she is likely gay, Lucy voices to Jane that she thinks about kissing Brittany. The problem is that it isn’t clear whether or not Brittany is straight.

She learns after hanging out with Brittany one night that, like herself, she’s never made out with a woman. However, the way she talks and touches Lucy indicates that she’s open to the idea.

While Jane thinks Lucy should go for someone more assured of their sexuality, Lucy eventually sleeps with Brittany anyway. While this pretty much confirms to Lucy that she’s gay, it seems to confirm for Brittany that she’s straight and was only curious. Soon after, she tells Lucy that she’s moving to Portland to be with her ex-boyfriend.

Why do Lucy and Jane fight?

Jane takes Lucy to a lesbian club called The Womb, where Lucy fails to make any connections. Jane, however, ends up making out with someone there. This upsets Lucy, likely because Jane is having an easier time with something that isn’t nearly as important to her as it is to Lucy.

The next day, the incident starts a fight between the best friends. Jane thinks Lucy hasn’t been happy about her promotion that will be taking her to London. Meanwhile, Lucy thinks Jane just does whatever she wants and bosses her around. According to Jane, that’s because Lucy can’t make any decisions on her own. The fight ends with Jane accusing Lucy of treating her like her significant other.

The fight leads to Jane asking her boss for permission to leave for London earlier.

How does Am I OK? end?

During her time apart from Jane, Lucy makes a big effort to make changes in her life without depending on Jane to make them for her. She quits her job at the spa, starts painting again, and goes on dates with women. One of them goes rather well.

Lucy takes the first step toward reconciliation by leaving Jane a “Happy Birthday” message. Meanwhile, Jane’s boyfriend breaks the news that he can’t go with her to London. She also realizes that her friend Kat is no stand-in for Lucy.

Finally, the friends meet up, just one week before Jane is set to leave for London. Lucy shares all the changes she’s made in her life. She did have problems, but she also wonders whether it was easier for Jane to focus on Lucy’s problems rather than her own. Jane apologizes to Lucy for trying to solve her problems the way she did.

The movie ends with Lucy driving both of them to the airport. Jane has to start her new job in London, and Lucy is going with her for the first two weeks to help her settle in.
