It has been a long three years since American Rust season 1 hit our television screens, and it ended with the promise of more stories in the world of Chief Del Harris, superbly portrayed by Jeff Daniels. It originally appeared on Showtime, but in a rather surprising move, they chose to cancel it, leaving fans devastated and craving for more. Luckily, Amazon Prime stepped in and took on the crime drama, with all ten episodes of season two available to stream instantly on the platform. It has now been retitled American Rust: Broken Justice, and it moves at a much faster pace than its predecessor and is much better for it.

Season 1 superbly set the scene, but season 2 takes it to the next level and benefits from the instant binge of all ten episodes in succession as each episode sets up the next one with an intriguing cliffhanger. Dexter alum Luna Lauren Velez joins the cast as the stand-out newcomer, playing Harris’s new partner Angela Burgos in the Pittsburgh PD, where the ex-chief of Buell now plies his trade after the shocking triple murder he was involved in at the end of season 1.

Season 2 cleverly mixes a new mystery with the previous events in the show, to create a rather stunning ten episodes of drama. The characters who return from the first season all have a key part to play in the new story, and as the season progresses, we see how everything fits in together. It is essentially a twisted family drama at its heart, with one of the episodes featuring a large sequence involving a party to celebrate Grace and Virgil Poe’s divorce. There are funny moments mixed with real horror, as everything goes from bad to worse for the residents of Buell. Amazon deserves credit for saving this absolute gem of a show, with the potential for more compelling stories if Season 3 is picked up.

The standout episodes of the season are Episodes 6 and 10, which feature some of the most tense drama we’ve seen on our television screens in recent years. Every episode is strong and builds up the tension very well, until it all blows up in the finale. Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney are central to the success of this show, but they are joined by a very strong supporting cast, and some brilliant new additions. The season ends on a massive cliffhanger that whets the appetite for more stories in this troubled universe.
