The Spy Who Came in From the Cold
A Man on the Inside episode 8 starts with Didi talking to the staff and Charles about what happened. Of course, Didi is not happy with the fact that Charles and Julie entered the premises under false pretence.
Who is the thief?
Sadly, the thief turns out to be Gladys. However, she didn’t maliciously steal the necklace or the watch. With her memory failing, she thought they were part of her collection since she used to be a costume designer. Charles convinces her to give him the necklace by acting like an actor, looking for costumes for a play. In the end, the staff finds some of the missing things like the saltshakers in Glady’s room. After solving the case, Didi kicks Charles and Julie out of the home.
What happens to Charles?
Before leaving, he tells Calbert the truth and the old man is hurt. He thought Charles was his real friend. Charles explains their friendship is real, but Calbert is still angry. The other residents get wind of Charles being a spy and get angry at him, too. They declare him a public enemy and start rumours about him being an international spy.
Emily helps Charles pack up and return home. They finally talk about Victorian and Emily helps her dad go through some of her mom’s stuff in the garage to donate. Through this, they bond and start being more open with each other. Charles admits that on the day Victoria died, he was planning to break their promise and put her in a nursing home. Thanks to his new, deeper relationship with Emily, Charles is able to let go of his guilt. He also starts giving guest lectures at the university.
Does Didi quit?
Upon hearing that Didi is quitting, Julie and Charles meet with her and convince her to stay. All the residents are glad that Didi is not leaving. When Calbert talks to Didi, she tells him that Charles was the one who changed her mind. Calbert rethinks his decision to end his friendship with Charles and reaches out to him. They rebuild their friendship, and Calbert gladly informs Charles that his son chose to stay in San Francisco instead of moving to Singapore. Thanks to Charles’s advice, Calbert has got closer to his son. In the end, Calbert invites Charles to Elliot and Virginia’s wedding. This gives Charles a chance to apologise to the residents and get on their good side again.
How does A Man on the Inside end?
Mr Cubbler is grateful his case got solved, but doesn’t appreciate Charles’ advice to visit his mom more often. The episode ends with Julie getting a new case and the only man suitable for the job is Charles. She gives him a call and, even without all the details, he happily agrees to the new mission.
The Episode Review
What a sweet, sentimental show! Ted Danson did an exemplary job as Charles. He is the glue that holds this show together even as it veers off the mystery in some episodes. All the actors brought their A-game. What I loved about the show is the realistic way they broached the subject of ageing and embracing our journeys at different points in our lives. This was a different kind of comedy, and you certainly won’t be falling off your seat while laughing, but is a worthwhile show.
