9-1-1: Lone Star – Season 5 Episode 7 “Kiddos” Recap & Review

Kiddos

9-1-1: Lone Star season 5 episode 7 starts with the medic team returning to the station after a call. TK is surprised when he gets back and sees a surprise birthday celebration for him. Another surprise comes in the form of his stepdad, Enzo, who pulls up in a Mclaren. Of course, Owen is not pleased to see his long-time nemesis. Especially when you consider that Enzo is gifting TK his dream car, the McLaren. He vents to Judd and TK warns him to keep it cool on the weekend when they will hold his real birthday celebration. Owen promises to be on his best behaviour and suggests they all have dinner before the big event on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Wyatt gets a call from a woman planning to jump after learning she has retinitis pigmentosa. Wyatt convinces the woman, Isla, to reconsider her choice as he urges 126 to hurry. After hearing Wyatt’s story, the woman changes her mind. However, she slips and nearly plunges to her death. Thankfully, the team arrives to save her before that happens.

At the hospital, Nancy escorts Tommy to her next doctor’s appointment. The doctor confirms that Tommy has breast cancer and gives her a prognosis. Tommy decides to have a lumpectomy the next day. Nancy tries to advise Tommy against making drastic decisions, but fails. Tommy is in denial and hiding the truth from her family and friends. Nancy worries that Tommy is in denial, but there is not much she can do.

The following night, the dinner at Owen’s starts with the host taking the high road. But Owen switches lanes when Enzo suggests that the last arm-wrestling battle they had ended in a draw. He eggs Owen to have a rematch and, sadly; it ends with paramedics being called to Owen’s house when he breaks Enzo’s arm. TK is livid and says Owen should have treated Enzo better because he was always there for him. He adds that if it were not for Enzo convincing him that Owen was a good man, he wouldn’t have become a firefighter. Ouch!

The next day, Nancy takes Tommy for her outpatient surgery. She suggests that Captain Stephen can take over Tommy’s position for a short while. Nancy worries that Tommy is not considering the seriousness of the situation. She has been there with her mom before and knows how hard it can be. However, Tommy refuses to take time off and insists she is not Nancy’s mother.

On the other side of town, a man, Will, takes his girlfriend’s daughter on a kiting date. He uses the opportunity to ask her permission to propose to her mom. The little cute kid is surprised but distracted when her kite gets stuck in a tree. Will offers to get it and ends up falling and getting stuck on the tree.

The 126 comes to the rescue and watching Will be brave for his daughter helps Owen understand TK and Enzo more. At the same time, Tommy continues working after her surgery, causing Nancy to worry more. In the end, Tommy’s quick thinking saves Will and the little girl gives him her blessing to marry her mom.

Saturday night comes along and the TK birthday party is banging. Owen decides to give Enzo the benefit of the doubt and some grace. Everyone has a great time and even Tommy flirts with one of the musicians performing at the party. However, things come to an abrupt end when the FBI barges in and arrests Enzo for tax evasion and other things. TK is disappointed when he learns the truth about his extravagant birthday gift. It turns out Enzo was using him to hide his assets. Owen comforts TK and doesn’t say, “I told you so!’’ He acknowledges that Enzo was a good father to TK and he just lost his way.

Back to Tommy, she gets home after the party and fixes her daughter’s costume. The girls wake up and demanded to know what happened at the party. As Tommy dishes the tea, she collapses and they call 9-1-1. Fortunately, Wyatt takes the call and helps the twins administer first aid. The paramedics arrive and Wyatt calls Judd.

The doctors report that Tommy had a blood clot due to over-exhaustion. After waking up, Tommy tells Judd and the girls about her cancer. She also asks Judd to call Nancy. Once Nancy arrives, Tommy admits it was a mistake to act like her sickness was a minor inconvenience. She is ready to take time off, but wants Nancy to be the new captain. Nancy is touched and scared, as she is not sure that she is ready for the position.

The Episode Review

Tommy pushed herself too hard and nearly lost her life. Her kids must have been really scared when she collapsed. It must have triggered their memories of what happened to their dad. Tommy was hoping that the cancer would go away. Telling her loved ones made it all too real, and that is why she was avoiding it. We will miss her as the captain, but we know she needs all her strength to fight this. Besides, Nancy is more than competent to hold down the forte.

It was nice to see Henry Ian Cusick. He still looks dapper than ever. He nailed his role as Enzo. However, it is unfortunate he ends up getting arrested. On the flip side, Enzo helped Owen and TK get closer and face some hidden resentment from the past.
