Where Is Anabel?
Proof Of Life
Poisoned Message
Split across 3 episodes, 900 Days Without Anabel retells the horrific true story of a 22 year old kidnapped while out on a run. This single event went on to become Spain’s longest-running missing persons case. With real audio tapes from the kidnappers and a thorough look at the investigation, the production team go into detail over what happened – and why.
For those unaware, Anabel Segura’s kidnapping was massive news when it broke back in 1992. Set deep in the heart of Madrid, Anabel was out for a run when a white-painted van, holding 2 men inside, snatched her up and kidnapped the woman in broad daylight.
As we soon learn, Anabel was the eldest daughter to a businessman in the petrochemical business, Jose Segura. What ensues from here is a story that gripped the nation, as 900 days pass before answers are given. I won’t spoil them here for those unaware of the outcome, but suffice to say it’s a tale that does have a very definitive ending to this.
Along the way though, we hear a lot of audio from the kidnappers, with accompanying interviews from detectives and those who worked on the case. The family are also interviewed too, while archival footage of marches in the streets and news as it breaks also makes its way into the series.
There is some repeated footage here, especially stock re-enactments of the white van driving around Anabel’s neighbourhood, along with certain audio bites from interviews too, which is a bit of a shame. However, for the most part the show does center on using significant footage from the case, but the audio tapes are really the main focus here.
The three episodes are quite well-paced, although even with 3 hours worth of footage, it does sometimes feel a little slow, especially during the second episode as the focus shifts to finding what happened to Anabel and contemplating theories around her wellbeing and even if she’s still being kept by the kidnappers.
Foe the most part, this show does a good job in detailing all the events of the case, and including an array of interviews and accompanying material to make for a compelling watch.
If you’ve watched previous Netflix documentaries then you already know the score here. 900 Days Without Anabel is no exception, and the streamers have done a great job with this one, making for an easy recommendation.
