Check Out These Amazing Action Games!

Bayonetta is a bloody fun time. This game has likable characters, incredible hack-and-slash gameplay, and mesmerizing visuals. It’s a mature title with adult-oriented gore and sexual content. The fights and characters can feel over-the-top at times and some may get motion sickness due to its fast-paced action scenes. However, those wishing to tear through crude and ominous angels as Bayonetta will find this game a worthwhile experience.

Of course, for all the games we’ve reviewed, we’ve also added a handy link, so you can check out our full thoughts on that and see if it’s something you want to invest your time in.

So without further ado, we present 8 games to check out if you’re looking for a game like Bayonetta.

Devil May Cry (Series)

If you’re a Bayonetta fan, then you must play the Devil May Cry games. Both series are great action-heavy titles with great narratives, characters, and charming worlds. Bayonetta’s creator Hideki Kamiya played a large role in Devil May Cry’s early days and isn’t afraid to make reference to Devil May Cry’s universe whenever he gets the chance.

On the other hand, Devil May Cry’s combo gameplay is more strict than Bayonetta’s. You’ll need to perform commands excellently if you hope to look stylish in front of your foes. Devil May Cry also contains some grand horror elements from its demonic enemies to its darkened settings. The music is on par with what you’d listen to in the Bayonetta series too.

If you’re looking for a game with solid gameplay, mesmerizing graphics, and dark and slightly comedic storytelling, check out the Devil May Cry series.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

Do you need another game with an excellent female protagonist? Look no further than Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (Bloodstained). This is a game that pays homage to classic Metroidvania titles like Castlevania. It features a charming gothic setting swarming with horrifying monsters for you to slay.

It contains a strong female lead protagonist named Miriam who has great characteristics.  She’s an orphan who wound up crystalized due to an alchemist’s curse. To save herself and humanity, she must traverse her old friend Gebel’s demon-infested castle, and slaughter every creature in sight. This game gets more challenging the deeper you traverse the castle.

It has a unique art style that will remind folks of Bayonetta’s dark landscapes and cities. The gameplay is vastly different from Bayonetta’s though. While both games have monsters for you to defeat, Bloodstained is a side-scrolling action RPG, unlike Bayonetta. Regardless, you’ll enjoy what this game delivers.

Celeste

For more games with great female lead characters, we have Celeste. In it, players control Madeline, a girl with a lot of weight on her shoulders. You must navigate Madeline through many treacherous events that’ll help her defeat any sleeping demons inside her. She wishes to reach Celeste Mountain for some unknown reasons but knows it’ll help her resolve her issues.

This 2D platformer isn’t a cakewalk. It challenges players with its deadly level design. However, Madeline’s the star of the game and will make traversing up the mountain feel less like a chore. From her colorful personality to her struggles with mental health, many players will admire her character represents from a realistic perspective.

With some beautiful visuals, a soothing soundtrack, and a well-written female protagonist, you’re bound to fall in love with this cherished indie title.

Dead or Alive (Series)

Dead or Alive isn’t as lively as it used to be. However, its lack of new entries shouldn’t stop you from playing it. This game offers engaging gameplay, decent storytelling, and a slew of likable characters. This is a 3D fighting game with great personality, clever stage designs, and fun mechanics.

The stages are multi-tiered and can lead to some chaotic fun. The mayhem it generates is reminiscent of how players feel while controlling Bayonetta in her games. From knocking characters off stages to the characters’ quirky banter, this series oozes personality. On that note, the game’s settings and character models are nice to the eyes.

You’ll admire the level of detail that went into designing these landscapes and character models. For example, in Dead or Alive 6, you’ll receive enhanced character expressions that depict them feeling anxious or tired. If you’re looking for a funny and enjoyable fighting game with a great personality, check out the Dead or Alive titles.

Nier Automata

Nier Automata is a fabulous Action RPG. It gained a worldwide following upon its release and its protagonist 2B is a well-beloved character. Nier Automata has become so popular that it recently received an anime dedicated to it. While 2B is a great protagonist, many people enjoy this game for its incredible graphics, enemies, and gameplay.

This title takes place in a dystopian version of Earth. Humanity no longer inhabits this planet because it was invaded and destroyed by machines. Therefore, humanity is from a resistance group that creates android warriors. They send these fighters to Earth to eliminate the evil ones. 2B is among those androids and you’ll get to see what Earth’s become through her eyes.

In this war between good and evil, you’ll also uncover a deep mystery about Earth before the evil robots controlled it. Like Bayonetta, this game harbors excellent storytelling and gives you a deep dive into 2B’s mind. You’ll adore seeing her break free from her robotic shell and demonstrate humane traits as the story unfolds. If you loved Bayonetta’s fast-paced combat and storyline, you’ll grow to love Nier Automata.

Darksiders

Darksiders is a dark action-adventure game with fun combat. The hack-and-slash combat can get tiresome for some folks, though. You’ll be fighting multiple enemies as you explore the game’s gritty locales. The game will have you backtracking numerous times to complete its multitude of puzzles and dungeon quests.

Darksiders also features a fun trading system. This allows players to secure weapons and gear that’ll add an elemental effect to their arsenal. This will make the game’s action aspects mildly refreshing. If you enjoyed fighting the multiple angelic demons in the Bayonetta series, then you’ll have a blast stopping the angels and demons in Darksiders.

Astral Chain

Astral Chain was one of those Nintendo Switch games that came and went. It’s unfortunate because the title has wonderful visuals, stellar gameplay, and a nice plotline worth following. This game comes from the same developers behind Bayonetta, Platinum Games. Astral Chain is set in a futuristic city called The Ark.

Humanity’s protected by a police force called Neuron. Neuron protects humans from otherworldly creatures called Chimera. The Chimera wants to infect humanity with ‘redshift corruption’ and bring them to their realm. To stop the Chimera, Neuron officers collaborate with Legions (domesticated Chimera) to fight them.

Astral Chain has complex controls and utilizes every button available on the Nintendo Switch’s controller. You’ll be amazed by the number of combos you can perform with your Legion companion. Visually, the game looks and runs impressively on the console, but has occasional hiccups. If you’re looking for a great gem from Bayonetta’s developers, check out Astral Chain.

Bloodborne

If you’re up for a stronger challenge, Bloodborne awaits you. This is an action-adventure title developed by FromSoftware. It contains menacing enemies for you to conquer and vast locales worth exploring. It’s one of the few games many people haven’t touched due to its PlayStation exclusivity.

In it, players control a deadly hunter who traverses through a Victorian-like city called Yharnam. The city is rooted in doom and gloom due to many civilians dying from a strange disease. As their last hope, players must investigate Yharnam and locate this treacherous plague’s source. Those who found Bayonetta overly easy will not share the same sentiment with this game.

There are many beasts and cosmic entities who’ll stand in your way. From their horrid looks to their powerful punches, you’ll find yourself dying numerous times. The combat is fast-paced like Bayonetta, though. Bloodborne also features a nifty rick-and-reward system to cater to specific audiences. If you’re looking to travel through a darkened environment full of dangerous beasts, check out Bloodborne.
