Deadwood
Similarities – Western
Set in the 1870’s gold rush town of Deadwood, South Dakota, this critically acclaimed series dives into the lawless, gritty world of the Old West. The show follows a colourful cast of characters, including saloon owner Al Swearengen and newly arrived sheriff Seth Bullock, as they navigate shifting alliances, power struggles, and the fight for survival in a town that’s equal parts opportunity and chaos.
Deadwood blends sharp dialogue with a morally complex narrative. The show features a mix of rugged landscapes and power dynamics, along with an exploration of law, greed, and survival on the American frontier. Plus, the rich character development makes every betrayal and alliance hit that much harder.
Lioness
Similarities – Gritty Tension & Characters
Another Taylor Sheridan-produced series, Lioness follows a young female marine recruited into a covert CIA program known as “Lioness.” Tasked with infiltrating terrorist networks, her assignments are high-stakes and emotionally gruelling, forcing her to navigate both the dangers of her mission and the complexities of her own moral compass.
Lioness thrives on tension, power struggles, and deeply layered characters. The show delivers a potent mix of action and emotional depth, with Taylor Sheridan’s signature storytelling style shining through. If you’re after a show packed full of moral ambiguity and high stakes, Lioness will leave you enthralled.
1883
Similarities – Western & Taylor Sheridan
1883 is a special show. Styling itself as a western drama, 1883 combines elements of Red Dead Redemption 2 and Yellowstone with a dash of tension, romance and drama for good measure. Sure, the show has its dips, but 1883 manages to capture a very distinct, bleak period of history incredibly well.
The story itself is pretty straightforward and centers on a caravan moving through the Great Plains, with its inhabitants eager to reach Oregon and find a new home.
That caravan is fronted by Shea and Thomas, two hardened cowboys who know the way the world works and enact a strict “our way or the highway” approach. Together, they lead a rabble of immigrants across the land – but they aren’t alone.
1883’s slow pace works beautifully to drink in the scenery and if you’re after more of Taylor Sheridan’s unique, this is an easy recommendation.
Yellowstone
Similarities – Gang Warfare & Taylor Sheridan
Set in modern-day Montana, Yellowstone follows the Dutton family as they fight to defend their sprawling ranch from encroaching developers, political adversaries, and local Native American tribes. It’s a story of family loyalty, ambition, and power struggles in the American West.
Yellowstone offers a heady blend of breathtaking visuals, power struggles, and morally complex characters. If you’re craving more of Sheridan’s storytelling style—complete with high-stakes drama and layered relationships—this series should be your next binge-worthy obsession.
Justified
Similarities – Gang Warfare
Raylan Givens is a U.S. Marshal with a strict moral code and a penchant for solving problems with his gun. Set in Kentucky’s Appalachian Mountains, the series pits Raylan against criminals, family feuds, and his own troubled past as he navigates a world where the line between law and outlaw is constantly blurred.
Justified thrives on morally ambiguous characters and gripping drama. The show’s mix of sharp dialogue, intense standoffs, and deeply personal stakes makes it a natural fit for fans of Sheridan’s work. Raylan’s gritty world and relentless pursuit of justice will have you hooked from the start.
Hell on Wheels
Similarities – Western
Set during the construction of the transcontinental railroad, Hell on Wheels follows Cullen Bohannon, a former Confederate soldier, as he seeks vengeance for his wife’s murder. Along the way, he finds himself entangled in the brutal, corrupt world of railroad construction, complete with cutthroat politics and fierce rivalries.
Hell on Wheels captures the spirit of resilience, ambition, and revenge, while its historical backdrop provides a rich setting for exploring themes of power and justice. If you haven’t already, Hell on Wheels is definitely worth checking out.
Warrior
Similarities – Gang Warfare & Action
Cinemax’s latest action thriller, Warrior, is very good. Although it’s bound to draw some comparisons to Peaky Blinders for its gang-centric storyline, Warrior marches to the beat of its own drum and is all the stronger for it.
With the Hop Wei and Long Zii gangs on the brink of war, Ah Sahm arrives on the shores of San Francisco, determined to find his sister Mai Ling. Unbeknownst to him, she’s mixed up with the Long Zii while Ah Sahm himself is recruited to the Hop Wei following some impressive fighting at the dock.
Combining well choreographed fights, political scheming and a volatile 1870’s San Francisco setting, Warrior does well to keep things interesting and unpredictable throughout its seasons.
Banshee
Similarities – Violence & Drama
Much like The Boys, Banshee is a show that completely catches you off-guard. With a great storyline and an inspired Antony Starr in the driving seat, Banshee is one of those under-rated gems.
The story revolves around an ex-con assuming the identity of a murdered sheriff but as the narrative progresses, so too does the main premise of the show.
I won’t spoil anything here but Banshee is well worth a watch and with four seasons to boast, this one’s sure to keep you busy for a while.
Preacher
Similarities – Violence & Characters
Based on the comic book series of the same name, Preacher is a well written, bloody, violent romp that’s certainly worth checking out. The basic premise revolves around a preacher enlisting the help of a vampire and his ex to find God.
Only, the story goes so much deeper than that and across the four seasons, really comes into its own. I won’t spoil anything here but fans of The Boys will absolutely be taken with both the characters and the violence.
Godless
Similarities – Drama & Characters
Godless sets itself up to be a different kettle of fish compared to other Westerns. With its female empowerment theme running through the show and an interesting, talented cast, this is one oft-overlooked show you definitely shouldn’t sleep on.
After a mining accident wipes out almost every male in the town of La Belle, the self-sufficient women that now run the town, take in runaway Roy Goode and give him refuge. With the notorious Frank Griffin hunting the runaway with 30+ strong men at his side, Godless is a slow burning Western that builds toward a climactic, chaotic ending that’s definitely worth watching.
