Chainsaw Man

Similarities – Action

Chainsaw Man is another big hit from Studio Mappa that’ll appeal to everyone who loves the horror and action aspects of Hell’s Paradise. It follows Denji and his chainsaw devil companion Pochita. They spend their lives slaying devils to make money to pay for Denji’s deceased father’s debt. After getting set up by the yakuza, Pochita sacrifices himself to give Denji his powers.

This allows Denji to transform into Chainsaw Man and slaughter the people and devil who killed him. Eventually, Denji meets Makima and offers him a chance to work at Public Safety to slay devils. Denji accepts and we examine his new semi-luxurious life with his new team. Despite having questionable CGI use, Chainsaw Man has some incredibly barbaric fight scenes that will get your heart pumping.

Many younger audiences will relate to Denji’s delinquent and innocent persona. While his later goals won’t appeal to many, he does show some ounce of respect toward people like Gabimaru. Similarities – Action & Supernatural

Jujutsu Kaisen is another popular shonen that joins Chainsaw Man and Hell’s Paradise as a member of the magazine’s “dark trio,” according to most fans. This anime features common shonen tropes but is brimming with a fun cast of highly-skilled martial artists. In it, we follow Yuuji, a high school student who becomes a Jujutsu sorcerer after swallowing a cursed object containing a formidable demon. He’ll receive proper training and encounter many other skilled Jujutsu sorcerers who’ll make him stronger.

Like Gabimaru, Yuuji struggles with his own personal demons and combats real demons and skilled fighters on the side. The fights in this anime are well-animated and choreographed like in Hell’s Paradise. You’ll love seeing our characters perform neat martial arts tactics and utilize their distinct supernatural powers to torment their opponents. Both anime harbor deep lore and world-building that’ll keep viewers invested in each narrative and universe. This is a must-watch for any diehard shonen enthusiast.

Ninja Scroll

Ninja Scroll

Similarities – Action & Characters

Ninja Scroll is a classic anime that’ll pique many Hell’s Paradise fans’ interests. It doesn’t feature the best character development or plot, but it does contain violence and a setting on par with Hell’s Paradise. It follows Jubei, a wandering swordsman who has a tragic backstory but loves taking odd jobs. One day, he saves a female ninja named Kagero from a merciless opponent.

She explains her situation to him, but Jubei isn’t interested in her political problems. After a government spy poisons Jubei, he’ll be forced to assist Kagero in her warring political problems to receive a cure. Like Hell’s Paradise, expect epic martial arts, sword-fighting, and ninjutsu combat in Ninja Scroll. While some characters lack depth, the powers they display bring out their personalities.

Some characters have techniques that will remind you of other Shonen anime like Naruto. Jubei is as flawed as Gabimaru and has a heartbreaking past reeking of murder and betrayal. You’ll adore learning more about him as the story progresses. If you love protagonists with troubled backgrounds and anime with epic fights, Ninja Scroll should suffice.

Similarities – Sword-Play & Dark Worlds

Bleach is an iconic series from Shonen Jump’s catalog. It features great fights, fun characters, and an alluring dark aesthetic. It follows Ichigo, who gets attacked by a Hollow at his home. A Soul Reaper named Rukia comes to aid him but gets defeated by the Hollow. Rukia lends her power to Ichigo and he uses his new Soul Reaper abilities to vanquish the Hollow.

With his newfound powers, Ichigo must defend his world from more Hollows and evildoers. Like Gabimaru, Ichigo teams up with a few allies and combats multiple demons and evil humanoid figures. Bleach gives many of its characters proper development and characterization. Many will love Ichigo’s devotion to his allies and the many power-ups he receives during his journey.

The battles can look just as immaculate as Hell’s Paradise, especially with the new season dedicated to its Thousand-Year Blood War Arc. Both anime have great world-building and rich cultures. Where Bleach likes to delve into the politics and history of its Soul Society, Hell’s Paradise spends time fleshing out the inner and outer workings of Shinsenkyo and other places. Give Bleach a shot if you’re looking for a series that paved the way for stories like Hell’s Paradise and others.

Tokyo Ghoul

Similarities – Dark Worlds, Action, Supernatural

Tokyo Ghoul is an incredibly dark series. With its flawed characters, bone-chilling brutality, and gothic-like setting, Hell’s Paradise fans will find themselves at home with this anime. It follows Kaneki, a college student who goes on a date with a woman named Rize. The date goes awry, resulting in Kaneki waking up in a hospital bed afterward.

He leaves the facility and learns he’s become a human-flesh-craving monster called a Ghoul. Kaneki must learn to cope with his newfound powers while trying to live the life he once had. Both anime place our characters in dark environments rooted in themes like pain, suffering, and death. The world of Tokyo Ghoul is divided between humans and ghouls.

Hell’s Paradise’s Shinsenkyo is equally dangerous and features a variety of different creatures. Gabimaru and Kaneki must navigate through their treacherous settings if they hope to survive. Kaneki and Gabimaru are multi-layered characters with personal demons they’ll need to overcome to become stronger people. On top of having bloody fights and thrilling twists, Tokyo Ghoul is a must-watch.

Hunter X Hunter 2011

Similarities – Action-Adventure

Hunter X Hunter (2011) is a great action-adventure series. It follows Gon Freecss, a boy who leaves his home of Whale Island to become a professional hunter like his father Ging Freecss. Little does Gon know of the dangers that await him in his new endeavors. Fortunately, he’ll befriend multiple people who’ll make his travels a bit more satisfying.

Like Hell’s Paradise, Hunter X Hunter follows a group of characters who embark on a quest full of countless obstacles ranging from formidable warriors to weird creatures. Hunter X Hunter has a well-rounded ensemble cast. You’ll adore learning more about their different ideals, abilities, and motives throughout each arc. Both anime contain incredibly thrilling fights that can get overly violent.

You’ll see characters lose limbs, get eaten and beheaded, and experience other forms of pain. Nevertheless, many characters have enough drive and determination to withstand the excruciating discomfort they receive from their opponents. In addition to multiple story arcs, incredible world-building, and a complex power system, Hunter X Hunter is a must-watch for all Shonen fans.

Similarities – Battle-Royale & Action

For those who are in love with Hell’s Paradise battle-royale theming, Btooom! will entertain you. This anime follows Ryouta, a boy who winds up on an abandoned island and doesn’t know why and how he got there. Someone informs him that he’s been selected to participate in a long-term fight that’s structured like his favorite game, Btooom.

Ryouta must defeat seven other players and swipe their crystals to return home. After meeting a woman whose non-violent ideals align with his own, they vow to escape the island and defeat the person who placed them here. As one can tell, both anime place their characters on an island where they’ll need to swipe something and defeat opposing forces.

Viewers will get to see how the islands they’re traversing take a toll on their bodies and minds. Like Gabimaru and his comrades, Ryouta needs to rely on his wits and strengths if he hopes to escape the island alive. Both series feature some intense confrontations and fights that’ll get you pumped and leave you with anticipation for each episode. If you’re looking for another exhilarating anime with a battle-royale-like premise, check out Btooom.

Dororo (2019)

Similarities – Characters, Action-Adventure, Supernatural

Dororo (2019) is an incredible remake of the classic 1960s anime of the same name. It follows Hyakkimaru, a merciless warrior who travels with his child companion Dororo to slay demons. By slaying demons, Hyakkimaru restores pieces of his body and becomes more human. Like Gabimaru, Hyakkimaru’s quest is fueled by his desire to reclaim what’s rightfully his.

For Hyakkimaru it’s his humanity, while Gabimaru ventures through Shinsenkyo to find the Elixir of Life, so he can have another shot at being with his wife. Both protagonists’ journeys are littered with challenging obstacles that’ll thwart their progress. At the same time, Gabimaru and Hyakkimaru will meet new people who’ll assist them in reaching their goals. As they journey forward, Hyakkimaru and Gabimaru will confront their pasts and come to terms with their struggles.

This leads to amazing personal growth and gives them a chance to redeem themselves. Gabimaru and Hyakkimaru aren’t the most heroic protagonists you’ll meet. Both have dark backgrounds and personalities. However, it’s these flaws that make them interesting characters to follow in their respective tales. In addition to having some incredible fights and supporting characters, Dororo is an excellent anime to watch after Hell’s Paradise.
