Dark

Similarities – Mystery & Drama

Dark is thought provocative, regularly surprising and full of interesting characters to keep you watching until the final scene. Across its 3 season run, Dark shows exactly how to craft a compelling and complicated web of time travel.

The story begins in the (at time of broadcast) near future of 2019 Germany in a small town called Winden. This tight-knit community is rocked by the sudden disappearance of two young children who seem to be connected with a cave there.

This is one story you’ll probably need to revisit numerous times to catch all the clues along the way.  Using a distinctly dark tone and a gorgeous, atmospheric score, Dark is easily one of the best time travel series ever created and easily a top contender to add to your watch-list if you haven’t already.

12 Monkeys

Similarities – Story & Complicated Time Travel

When it comes to under-rated sci-fi, 12 Monkeys must be near the top of the list. This incredibly thrilling show completely surpasses its big screen brother to produce something really special – and criminally overlooked.

The story itself is relatively unchanged from the film. In the future, a virus has absolutely ravaged humanity and a lone time traveler jumps back to stop a plague from wiping out Earth. While this sounds simple in theory, 12 Monkeys quickly adds layers of depth to rival that seen in Dark.

After an enjoyable and relatively predictable first season, 12 Monkeys changes the game by introducing a shadowy group called the Army of the 12 Monkeys. They too seem desperate to change the past but to what end? What ensues from here is an incredible journey, one of the best sci-fi series ever produced and one that finishes with a spine-chilling conclusion.

Legion

Similarities – Good Twists & Cerebrally Charged Story

Legion is a challenging sci-fi series that exists somewhere within the weird space of the X-Men universe. It’s also one of the more unusual and visually stunning shows you’re likely to see in quite some time.

When you’ve watched Legion, you’ll know why this is on the list, especially given some of the twists during the latter periods of the show.

The story here revolves around a super mutant named David Haller. This troubled young man spends his time institutionalized after being diagnosed as schizophrenic.

What follows is an unforgettable journey as David tries to make sense of what’s happening and why he’s there. The show has three seasons and ends conclusively too, making for a solid watch that’s very much recommended.

Twin Peaks

Similarities – Tone & Mood

Twin Peaks is one of those classic, quintessential shows from the 90’s that sticks with you long after the final credits have rolled. The simple story about a peculiar FBI agent investigating the murder of a young woman – in the even more peculiar town of Twin Peaks – is simple but surprisingly effective.

It’s one of those rare gems that completely changed the landscape of the small screen when it released in 1990 and showed what could be achieved with horror through this medium.

There’s some genuinely creepy moments along the way, typified by the stunningly horrific nightmare montage in the episode “Lonely Soul.”

If you haven’t watched this already, you absolutely should – it’s one of the better shows out there.

The Missing

Similarities – Mystery

The Missing, unsurprisingly, is a series about a missing child. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare and the way The Missing captures this in its rawest essence is partly why the show works as well as it does.

Our protagonists here are Tony and Emily Hughes, who travel to France with their 5-year-old son Oliver. Their family holiday turns into a nightmare when Oliver disappears from a large celebrating crowd in Northern France.

Suspenseful, gripping and split across two seasons, The Missing really hits that character-driven essence of what makes this scenario so frightening. It also makes for quite the engrossing watch that we highly recommend checking out.

The Devil’s Hour

Similarities – Story & Characters

Amazon Prime’s latest thriller demands that you pay attention to the minute details, and with a string of clues along the way, the narrative throws up several big reveals that completely change the game. The protagonist that deals with all of this shock and drama is Lucy Chambers, who awakens every night a 3.33am after having a series of nightmares.

For some reason, her reality is distorted and she finds herself struggling to make sense of the world around her, seeing things that aren’t there, repeatedly dreaming of an interview with a serial killer called Gideon, and struggling with her son Isaac.

The Devil’s Hour is a well written and devastatingly effective psychological thriller. The show manages to do a great job with its characters and tone, eventually leading to some pretty shocking reveals.

Travelers

Similarities – Story & Characters

At first glance you’d be forgiven for writing off Travelers as another generic sci-fi show. After all, a collection of people coming together to try to stop the world from total annihilation is hardly the most original of ideas.

Where Travelers stands out though, is the unique way it manages to weave its unique premise through a well written plot and believable, complex characters.

The story takes place 100’s of years from now, as surviving humans discover how to send their consciousness back through time into people of the 21st century. Desperate to change the fateful path of humanity, Travelers combines mystery, action and tension to great effect.

The show does well to conclude its three season run too with an epic finale that does just about enough to conclude this tale on a high. However, it also leaves the door open for a possible reboot further down the line.

katla season 1

Katla

Similarities – Atmosphere & Mystery

The quintessential part of any compelling mystery box show is the hook. There’s also the fine-tuned balance between dangling a carrot on a stick and actually giving some solid answers to said mysteries. Over the years there have been a lot of these shows, each with varying degrees of success – and quality.

Netflix’s new Icelandic series is a bit of a mixed bag. This moody, atmospheric show absolutely revels in its unique mystery and there’s undoubtedly a compelling hook to all this. It is a slow burn but if you stick with it, the ending certainly makes it worth the wait.

outer range amazon

Outer Range

Similarities – Slow Burn Mystery

Outer Range is a moody, atmospheric neo-noir thriller. The story takes place on a large expanse of land in Wyoming, US, split by a dividing fence between two rival farms.

When Royal uncovers a bizarre mystery on the western expanse of his land, he’s unwittingly sucked into a sci-fi bending plot that changes his life forever.

This is intertwined with a brewing rivalry between the Abbott and Tillerson families. Royal’s sons, Perry and Rhett, end up fighting with Wayne Tillerson’s boys at a bar that night, with Trevor and Perry trading blows.

When tragedy strikes, an investigation is launched against the Abbott family. Fronting this is Sherriff Joy, who becomes a more central part of this story as the episodes tick by. But it’s Royal’s mystery find that drives the story forward.

Fringe

Similarities – Sci-Fi & Mystery

Fringe feels like a modern day X-Files, taking what made that show so great and adding a scientific edge to proceedings. The later seasons are absolutely fantastic and add some really shocking twists to the fold too, breathing new life into this show.

Fronting these various cases is F.B.I. agent called Olivia Dunham, who’s forced to work with an institutionalized scientist named Walter Bishop. Together with Walter’s estranged son Peter, they start to uncover various strange phenomena. These episodic cases are mixed in with a larger conspiracy that engulfs the series.

Fringe expertly blends these two narrative arcs together and tops it off with an excellent dynamic between the characters, growing and evolving over time to produce a really gripping sci-fi series.
