Mean Girls is one of those “girl movies” that can be termed a cult classic in the present day and age. The original film was released in 2004 and was remade into a musical in 2024, the year marking its 20th anniversary. The film gave us iconic phrases like “On Wednesdays we wear Pink” and “You can’t sit with us” among many others.

The film follows the story of Cady Heron, a young high schooler who enters the world of public school after being homeschooled all her life. At the school, Cady learns all about social hierarchies as she understands all about girl cliques. Upon her friend’s request, Cady tries to join the most popular clique of mean girls from the school as a joke only to realise how she was slowly turning into one of the mean girls herself.

Upon learning that she is the DUFF in her group, Bianca decides to transform her social pecking order by seeking help from her childhood friend and neighbour.

The Edge of Seventeen (2016)

This high-school romance follows the life of a 17-year-old, Nadine who breaks down after learning that her childhood best friend is dating her brother behind her back. All at once, Nadine feels more alone than ever, until an unexpected friendship with a thoughtful teen gives her a glimmer of hope.

Pitch Perfect (2012)

The film follows the story of a freshman University student, Becca who is cajoled into joining The Bellas, an all-girls singing group from her University. She’s The Man (2006)

Another classic chick flick like Mean Girls, She’s The Man follows the story of Viola who disguises herself as her fraternal twin brother to enter his elite boarding school after the soccer team at her school is dissolved. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

This classic romance is an absolute tear-jerking chick flick that follows the story of a high-school boy Cameron who wants to date Bianca. However, Bianca is not allowed to date until her older sister dates. Cameron then pays the school’s mysterious bad boy Patrick to fake date Bianca’s anti-social introvert sister Kat.

Freaky Friday (2003)

Freaky Friday is a high school comedy that follows the story of an overworked mother who does not get along with her daughter. One day, the mother-daughter duo switch bodies and are forced to adapt to the other’s life for one Freaky Friday.
