Plastic Memories

Similarities – Drama, Romance, Sci-fi

For anime fans who are in the mood for another romance series with a normal male and robotic female lead, Plastic Memories should interest you. This anime follows Tsukasa, a boy tasked with retrieving Giftias (robots) before they become dangerous entities. Eventually, Tsukasa’s corporation pairs him with a female Giftias named Isla.

As such, Tsukasa must do everything to maintain peace. Much like Atri (so far), Plastic Memories touches upon topics like loss and love in beautiful ways. Despite their obvious differences, Isla and Tsukasa are a wonderful pair throughout the anime’s run. However, it’s worth noting that Plastic Memories doesn’t focus on its darker aspects as one would like.

It favors its romantic and ordinary life segments above its darker content. This can be a buzzkill for many folks. However, if fans are okay with that then give this anime a chance.

Clannad After Story

Similarities – Characters, Drama, Romance

Clannad After Story (After Story) is an anime sequel done right. It takes the best parts of Season 1 and doubles down on it, leaving audiences with an anime they’ll always remember. In it, we continue to follow Tomoya and his friends. This time they must navigate the trials that occasionally pop up after high school. From maintaining jobs to safeguarding friendships, viewers better buckle up and prepare to have wet eyes.

Nonetheless, like Atri (so far), After Story tackles concepts like abandonment, family, and friendship in genuine ways. Additionally, Tomoya’s corrupt relationship with his father slightly mirrors the tension between Natsuki and Nonko, Natsuki’s grandmother. The situations aren’t one-to-one based on what we’ve seen in Atri, but the situation surrounding Nonko and Natsuki screams “problematic.”

While both shows offer depressing scenarios, these anime contain satisfying comedic bits that’ll get folks chuckling. This is thanks to both tales including entertaining characters like Fuko and Atri to keep matters pure. Coupled with its gorgeous visuals, romance enthusiasts should watch this anime.

Angel Beats

Similarities – Drama, Romance, Tone

Waking up in a world that teeters between life and death would confuse and spooky anyone. This is the situation Angel Beats’s Otonashi finds himself in. As Otonashi wanders through this eerie locale, he’ll meet the Afterlife Battlefront, made of several students. He learns the Afterlife Battlefront’s goal is to annihilate their student council president, Angel (or Kanade).

Yet, after Otonashi meets Kanade, he learns she’s not a terrible person. Therefore, we examine how Otonoshi plans to settle the problems between Kanade and this faction. Otonashi and Kanade’s dynamic mirrors Atri and Natsuki’s. Both pairs had never seen the other before but grew to appreciate the other’s presence. At least that’s the route Atri and Natsuki’s relationship is heading toward.

Moreover, Angel Beats’s supporting characters have depressing backgrounds. From parental troubles to health complications, viewers will sympathize with these characters’ unfortunate past lives. All in all, Angel Beats is a must-watch!

Chobits

Similarities – Drama, Romance, Sci-fi

Chobits is one series many retro anime fans recalled after watching Atri’s first set of episodes. Chobits follows Hideki, a boy who goes for a stroll, only to discover a lone female robot. He brings her home and calls her Chii since she can’t say other terms. After learning about Chii’s shortcomings and dormant potential, Hideki takes Chii under his wing, hoping to teach her about his world.

Much like Atri, Chii’s not the brightest droid in her series. Fortunately, Chii slowly becomes more aware of her world’s concepts. This leads to wholesome and funny scenarios between her, Hideki, and other cast members. Additionally, this anime takes a while to get going, so fans who aren’t fond of slow-paced programs may tune out early from this one.

Nonetheless, those who stick with it will be glad they did. On top of giving viewers side characters who contribute to Chobit’s lead duo’s relationship and narrative in bountiful ways, this anime is worth checking out.

Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song

Similarities – Characters & Sci-fi

Atri isn’t the only modern anime with a world where humans and robots live amongst each other. Vivy: Fluorite’s Eye Song is another brilliant sci-fi series that’ll take your breath away. This anime centers its tale around Vivy, a robot who must prevent a war from occurring. This sci-fi anime will make audiences contemplate what it means to be human.

It’s a deep work with splendid fight scenes and well-written characters that you’ll develop a close connection with. Vivy is a wonderful female lead. She embarks on a fascinating journey of internal growth that’ll leave folks amazed. Although Atri hasn’t gone through her share of internal development like Vivy yet, it’s likely she will, considering the route Atri is heading toward (as of this writing).

Next to having beautiful visuals and a phenomenal soundtrack, Vivy: Fluorite’s Eye Song is worth adding to your watchlist.

Pluto

Similarities – Characters & Sci-fi

Netflix doesn’t always offer the best anime originals on the planet. Yet when they do fans can’t help but give the company kudos. Pluto is an example of one of those rare smash hits from Netflix. Like Atri, this anime offers a complex and visually alluring sci-fi ecosystem where robots indulge in human activities. From servant droids to robots who engage in war, you’ll be enamored by this series’s universe.

Additionally, the robots in this series all contain unique designs, some resembling humans, much like Atri herself. From Atom to Epsilon, fans will appreciate Osamu Tezuka and Naoki Urasawa’s take on robotic humanoids. However, it’s worth mentioning that Pluto feels more suspenseful and action-packed compared to Atri (so far).

Fans can expect the robots to clash in Shonen-like battles and other droids to engage in thrilling investigations in Pluto. Nonetheless, fans should go into this anime expecting a well-written detective story.

Time of Eve

Similarities – Sci-fi

Time of Eve is set in a world where androids live to serve humans. The robots must adhere to strict guidelines, and only certain humans treat them as equals. Eventually, our lead, Rikuo, arrives at a cafe after finding a hidden message in Sammy, his android’s, activity logs. At the cafe, Rikuo learns he must treat the cafe’s robots with respect.

Much like Natsuki (so far), Rikuo will develop a deeper connection with the robots he meets and sees within his environment. Many praise Time of Eve for tackling concepts like identity, freedom, and awareness in intricate and profound ways. Additionally, the show’s visuals, are effective and expressive, despite its simplistic approach to character design.

At the same time, the series’s use of CGI isn’t too impressive. Nonetheless, those moments shouldn’t ruin a fan’s viewing of this work. Therefore, if you’re looking for a sci-fi anime with a gripping world and a wonderful take on human and AI coexistence, check this out.

Yokohama Shopping Log

Similarities – Sci-fi & Slice of Life

Although it’s not the best manga-to-anime adaptation fans will ever see, Yokohama Shopping Log is worth a try. Much like Atri, Yokohama Shopping Log is set in a world that suffered from a catastrophic event. Alpha is a robotic protagonist like Atri’s Atri who serves people. However, in Alpha’s case, she works at a cafe that barely gets customers.

Eventually, Alpha receives a camera from a fellow robot. This entices Alpha to go on several trips for photography purposes. Like Atri, this anime contains alluring slice-of-life moments. From gauzing upon vast shores to chatting with locals on a hot Summer’s day, Alpha will experience life in ways reminiscent of how normal humans tackle those tasks.

The feeling folks will receive from those scenes will correlate with the grounded shopping and oceanic explorations we’ve received from Atri (so far). If you’re after a short and slightly thought-provoking anime, check this out.

Aria The Animation

Similarities – Sci-fi & Slice of Life

Aria The Animation (Aria) is a fantastic, cozy, and enjoyable sci-fi anime. Like Atri, this anime delivers an alluring water-themed setting with great characters and storytelling. In it, we follow Akari, a girl who wants to become a successful tour guide. Like Atri with Natsuki, Akari likes helping people with their troubles.

Akari is also capable of making folks adore her. She wins them over through her unique characteristics. Aria’s Neo-Venezia, its setting, is gorgeous and well-designed much like Natsuki’s homeland in Atri. You’ll enjoy seeing Akari, Alicia, and others wandering Neo-Venezia’s streets, exploring its little rivers by boat, and attending other locations it offers.

In addition to having satisfying comedic bits, Aria The Animation is worth your time.

Little Busters

Similarities – Drama & Slice of Life

Little Busters is a fun anime from J.C. Staff Studios. It follows a troubled male protagonist named Riki, who joins the Little Busters group. This is comprised of misfits much like himself. Like Natsuki in Atri, Riki and the Little Busters will explore their surroundings with others, hoping to uncover these areas’ secrets and solve their mysteries.

This is a tale of romance, friendship, and family. It’s an anime that’ll make you bawl your eyes out and one that will sit with you for a good morsel of time. The supportive figures in Riki’s life are distinct and memorable, much like Minami, Catherine, and others in Atri. Despite being a decade-old work, Little Buster’s visuals hold up well.

Lastly, the comedy is nearly similar to the humor you’ll find in Atri (so far). If you’re up for a funny, memorable, and emotional anime, why not give Little Busters a shot?
